Vulture's 25 Best Action Films since DIE HARD

Recommended Posts

Lists always incite discussion. :) Here are Vulture.com's 25 best action films since the original DIE HARD. Here are their caveats: only one movie in a franchise. Their definition of an action film: there not only needs to be a lot of action, but if you took the action out, the film or plot wouldn't make sense. And lastly, no animation.

25. Supercop

24. Point Break

23. Crank

22. Avatar

21. Casino Royale

20. La Femme Nikita

19. Unstoppable

18. Battle Royale

17. Spider-Man 2

16. Mission: Impossible

15. Speed

14. The Fugitive

13. The Bourne Ultimatum

12. The Rock

11. Run Lola Run

10. Jurassic Park

9. Once Upon a Time in China

8. The Matrix

7. Hero

6. The Last of the Mohicans

5. T2

4. Kill Bill Vol 1

3. Minority Report

2. Hard Boiled

1. The Dark Knight

Thoughts? :)

Personally, I have a few quibbles about placement, and one or two I disagree with entirely, but that's a pretty solid filmography for someone to watch, if they haven't seen some of the list.

Not sure about Unstoppable, Crank, or Supercop but I think Star Trek ('09) and Inception should be on the list. Other notable action films: True Lies, MIB, Iron Man (I don't know if Black Hawk Down qualifies). I need to see The Hunt for Red October again but I remember that being great. X2 is certainly better than Speed and the three at the beginning of this post. I kind of love Kick-Ass as well.

HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER is one of my favorite films ever but I wouldn't call it an action film. Same with Trek or MIB or even IRON MAN (though IM probably comes closer than the others). I wouldn't call X2 an action film either.

I guess it's more of a thriller. Would you not include X2 and Iron Man because they are Superhero films or for other reasons? I do think Iron Man is more of an "action film" than TDK (although I prefer TDK). MIB is an action-comedy but yeah, it's not a pure action film. I still gotta see all those Jack Ryan films again.

This list is completely shit. Anyone who thinks TDK is a better action movie than Mission:Impossible need to have their head examined.

Edit : Point Break is only #24 and there is no Fast and Furious. Fuck Vulture.

Going by the spirit of the list, I'd exclude them because they're not focused on the action: it's not a vital and absolute center to the story. (For the same reason, I'd exclude SPIDEY 2 from that list).

And THE RAID definitely deserves to be on there. Not only is it about as pure an action film as you can get, it's really, really good.

You really think the person who made the list actually saw The Raid. Come on, I was half expecting Little Nicky to be in top 15 while I was scrolling down the list.

That makes sense. I'll have to check that out.
