Indian Box Office Thread | Jawan overtakes Pathaan, becomes highest grossing Indian movie of 2023

Recommended Posts

I have a question about Indian box office.Chennai Express broke 3 idiots record and such?Do these films make a lot of money by really high ticket prices or actually big admissions hits like past hits like HAHK and DDLJ and such /

'3 Idiots' probably sold twice as many tickets as CE. Avg. ticket prices have been rising at approx 15% per year for the last 6-7 years.

While it cannot be considered the final authority regarding adjusted for inflation tgrosses for Bollywood movies. This article seems to have some credibility due to its methodology.. I like the fact that he has included Jai Santhoshi Maa in his article. This was an all-time blockbuster everywhere except the south in 1975.

Biggest bollywood hits on 5 scales – FF, IAR ROI, PPP, DRS

By danish on

June 14, 2011  inNaachGaana Bol

I have evaluated the biggest bollywood hits on five key scales. FF (footfalls) IAR(Inflation adjusted revenue) ROI (return on investment) PPP (patronizing population percentage) DRS (duration of record standing) all figures have been rounded off to the nearest.

1ST FF (Footfalls- ‘Then’ revenue divided by ‘Then’ average ticket rates)

1. Sholay – (15 cr) 150000000/1.50 rs = 100000000 (10 cr)  2. HAHK – (70 cr) 700000000/ 10 RS = 70000000 (7 cr)  3. Mughle aazam- (5.5 cr) 55000000/1Re = 55000000 (5.5 cr) 4. Mother India – (4cr) 40000000/80 Paise = 500000000 (5 cr)  5. Jai santoshi Maa (5 cr) 50000000/ 1.25Rs = 40000000 (4 cr) (released same year as sholay but worked more in villages and small towns hence ticket rates 1.25 Rs)  6. Kismat – (1 cr) 10000000/ 25 Paise = 40000000 (4 cr)  7. Rattan – (1cr) 10000000/25 Paise = 40000000 (4 cr)  8. DDLJ – (60 cr) 600000000/ 15 Rs = 40000000 (4 cr) 9. Maine pyaar kiya- (14 cr) 140000000/4 Rs = 35000000 (3.5 cr)  10. Gadar – (75 cr) 750000000/25 Rs = 30000000 (3 cr)  11. Raja Hindustani – 480000000/20 Rs = 24000000 (2.4 cr)  12. Kuchh kuchh. HH – (48 Cr) 480000000/24 Rs = 20000000 (2 cr)  13. Aankhein (Govinda) (14 Cr ) 140000000/7 = 20000000 (2 cr)  14. Dabangg (140 cr) 1400000000/ 100 Rs = 14000000 (1.4 cr) (worked more in single screens hence larger footfalls than 3 I 15. 3 Iditots ( 200 cr) 2000000000/150 = 13333333 (1.33 cr) (worked more in multiplexes)

2. IAR (Inflation adjusted revenue)

(method – footfall multiplied by current average ticket rate, Rs 100 for single screen oriented films, 150 rs for multiplesx oriented films. Don’t worry only 3 idiots and dabangg are affected, none of the other so called class films qualified. Also taking cumulative inflation or wholesale price index makes no sense as ticket rates are not affected by them)

1. Sholay – 100000000×100 = 1000 Cr 2. HAHK – 70000000x 100 = 700 Cr 3. M Azam 55000000×100= 550 Cr 4. Mother I 50000000×100 = 500 Cr 5. Jai santoshi 40000000x 100 = 400 Cr 6. kismet 40000000x 100 = 400 Cr 7. rattan – 40000000×100 = 400 Cr 8. ddlj 40000000×100 = 400 cr 9. MPK 35000000×100 = 350 cr 10. gadar 30000000×100 = 300 cr 11. Raja H 24000000×100 – 240 cr 12. KKHH – 20000000X100 = 200 cr 13. Ankhein 20000000×100 = 200 Cr 14. 3 idiots 200 cr (no inflation adjustment) 15. Dabangg 140 cr = (no inflation adjustment)

3. ROI (return on investment) revenue divided by budget.

1. Jai santoshi maa – 50000000 /500000 = 10000 % 2. nadiya ke paar 30000000/2000000 = 1500% 3. HAHK 700000000/70000000 = 1000% 4. Maine pyaar kiya 140000000/20000000 = 700% 5. Sholay 150000000/30000000 = 500%

(rest is too irrelevant and hence, cumbersome to calculate, a distant 6th will most probably be kismet, rattan. Ddlj or 3 idiots, much under 500%)

4. PPP (percentage of patronizing population ) estimated population in that year divided by footfall. All numbers rounded to approximate.

1. sholay (1975) – 700000000 / 100000000 = 14% 2. mughle aazam 550000000/55000000 = 10% 3. Mother India – 500000000/50000000 = 10% 4. Hahk = 1000000000/70000000 = 7% (asaprox) 5. Jai santoshi ma 700000000/40000000 = 5% (aaprox)

5. DRS (Duration of record standing) unadjusted revenue overtaken

1. sholay 19 years (1975-1994) (HAHK overtook) 2. mughle aazam – 15 years (1960-1975) sholay overtook 3. Hum aapke hain kaun 7 years (1994-2001) gadar overtook 4. mother India 3 years (1957-1960) mughle aazam overtook 5. 3 idiots 2 years (2009-2011) still standing

Deepika Padukone is on a tremendous streak. She could have five 100 cr. grossers in 2013 if Kochidayen were to reach that milestone. I think Race 2 is either close to 100 cr net or just under the number. Just like with Indian movie collections, its hard to take the collections reported at face value.

I think Ram-Leela will miss 100cr. It should have done, but the right wing protests and controversy hurt the movie.

It is likely to be around 70 crores after week one. If it can avoid drastic drops from second week on wards, it has a decent chance at 100 cr.

500 Cr is pretty much an impossible figure considering that it hasn't done that well overseas. It will top out at 50-75Cr OS. This is just posturing for media attention.

Except Boxofficeindia.com, every single tracking outfit in India has put Krrish 3 well over Rs. 200 Crores (obviously including Telugu and Tamil version grosses). Hrithik Roshan himself confirmed the Rs. 206 Cr in 10 days number. I would take that over some biased boxoffice site even to this day does not include other language version grosses to the total. Total losers.

And now Rakesh Roshan confirms that it has somehow grossed 500 crore. What are your thoughts on this?

I think he's referring to gross, not nett. But its even impossible to gross 500 crores. Because, to reach 500 Cr, the movie must have nearly 400 Cr nett, right?

At least 350 crore.

I know that he is referring to gross. But there is no way Krrish 3 has done even 400 crore gross, even if you include overseas figures.

Questioning the authenticity of those articles, Rakesh tells Bollywood Hungama that it is impossible for anyone to exaggerate an amount of Rs. 40-50 crores. There is no way one can inflate box-office collections.

According to his calculations, Rakesh Roshan quotes that Krrish 3 has finally made Rs 500 crore. He says if you calculate entertainment tax and everything else, then Krrish 3's gross collection has crossed Rs. 500 crores.

I'm surprised about some of your reactions here. Pay attention. Check the highlighted part. By Everything Else Rakesh clearly is talking about ancillary income. Seasoned Box Office followers cannot be naive enough to ignore revenue from ancillary sources.

Let me do some quick calcs here:

Domestic:

The last net number I saw was around Rs. 241 Crore.

Using the universally accepted rate of 30% as entertainment tax in India,

Gross = 241/0.7 = Rs. 344 Crore

Overseas:

Gross = Rs. 50 Crore

Satellite Rights:

The number was reported as Rs. 40 Crores in the media. It is certain to have an escalation clause and since Krrish3 has crossed Rs. 200 Cr Net, it is bound to have escalation as high as 50%. Conservatively, I will use 25% escalation.

Satellite+Escalation: Rs. 50 crores

Music and Video Rights (As Reported in the media):

Music: Rs. 6 Cr.

Video Rights: Rs. 2-3 Cr.

Music+Video Rights: Rs. 8 Crores

In Film Branding/Tie-Ins and Merchandising:

Heavy in-film placements, co-branding and merchandising activities are likely to recover about half the production cost for Krrish 3, the superhero science fiction movie released on Friday. The third in a series started in 2003 (Koi Mil Gaya), Krrish 3 has several brand tie-ups which are expected to fetch revenues of Rs 40-50 crore for production house Filmkraft. The figure is about half the film's overall production budget (Rs 80-90 crore).

http://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/super-moolah-riding-on-bollywood-superhero-krrish-113110200584_1.html

In Film Branding/Tie-Ins Revenue: Rs. 40 to 50 Crores.

Further, I have not even accounted for licensing revenue for the proposed animated Krrish show on Cartoon Network.

Add the revenue from all sources, Krrish3 is at about Rs. 500 Crores. That is my 2 cents.
