I believe film is as it is told but alternate theories are always very entertaining. These ones are very good. Last year was great for quality in Indian films.

Personally, I think he's Usual Suspects-ing Radhika Apte. Everything till we go back into flashback is real, everything after that was made up by him

Shall be around ₹93cr or $13.3mn by end of week.

Crossed 5mn admissions in India. That's more than South Korea, the third biggest market for the film. In term of admissions, I think its number 4 after America, China and Mexico.

But 5 million admissions in SK means almost 10% of their population went to see this movie. 5 million for India means 0.36% of the population. Thats a very vast gulf. And goes to show how much India has yet to grow.

Can you imagine if lots of movies start pulling 10% of Indian population. That would be like 136m people. But that data above that you posted showing footfalls actually decreasing in 2018 is concerning. I would have expected a growing market like India to show increasing viewership not less.

Was 2018 just an outlier in terms of that or  is decreasing footfalls a longer trend?

One, the footfalls are on drop since the beginning of the century.

Two, Captain Marvel got 5mn admissions on around 1800 screens while South Korea got 2000 plus screens for the film. Hollywood is still niche in India with just 10% of overall box office.

Regarding that turnout thing, North and Central India have very low cinema going culture. South India the ratio is as good as South Korea, with almost 20-30% of population turning out for their biggest film.

An analysis on the same.

Looks to me like India is better in watching foreign movie than the preference for local movies in the US.

I don't know if I understood your statement correctly, but yeah. The audience in North America for Indian films is basically Indian diaspora, though in good size, with a potential for $25mn Approx.

Not only Indian based movies.

I think the US audience in general is way too focused in US made material, hence the many re-imagined movies.

They do their own version before watching / get to watch an e.g. UK version.

If you say 10% Hollywood, it seems a better split than what the US watches.

There are exceptions for certain movies, but I mean the general situation

I don't even know which bollywood films are coming. Seems like kesari is the only one right now.

It's been a surprisingly good year for Bollywood so far. Uri, Manikarnika, Gully Boy, Total Dhamaal, Luka Chhupi, Badla are all hits and no major big movies failed apart from Ek Ladki Ko Dekha. One of the best first 3 months I can recall.

I forgot URI was released this year. I only saw URI and GB, both were decent. Will Indian film industry ever get star independent? In a way it's a good thing, as most young actors now are doing non-masala movies.
