Most underrated directors

Recommended Posts

Discuss the most underrated directors in your opinons.

My nominees:

Ridley Scott

He is one of the few directors that can handle almost all genres and make fantastic films across all these genres. Sci-fi, action movies, war flicks, crime thriller, gangster film, comedy, serious dramas, from Hollywood blockbusters to arthouse films to cult classics, you name it. Very few directors can do so many different kinds of movies.

Ridley, despite being very productive, can keep delivering solid to great works. The Academy owes him an Oscar.

Brian De Palma

The vastly hated director is a master in crime thrillers IMO. what else to say ? Just hope we can get more movies from him

Wes Craven

A horror master. I think he is as good as John Carpenter.

Andrew Dominik. Three films and all three are absolutely outstanding. Yet, almost no Oscar nominations (and none for him personally), total indifference from audiences and even the critics aren't fully on his side - The Assassination of Jesse James couldn't even manage 80% on RT, although it seems to be getting more and more acknowledged as one of the best films of the 2000s.

Lynne Ramsay. While I'm not enthusiastic about Morvern Callar, her debut Ratcatcher is a hell of a film, beautifully turning the grim kitchen sink drama on its head, and We Need to Talk About Kevin is an absolute stunner in nearly every respect, one of the most remarkable films of the past few years. Once again, no major prizes, not even from Cannes, and not enough attention from critics.

Alan Parker:

Midnight Express

Angel Heart

Mississippi Burning

The Commitments

He should have won an Oscar for two of those films.  Angel Heart is a better directed film than Wall Street and Rainman beating MB in any category, including actor, imo, is a farce.

Does Cronenberg count? The Fly is a classic, of course, and he's moved closer to mainstream in the past decade with A History of Violence and Eastern Promises. At the same time, not nearly enough people have seen - and of those who have, not nearly enough people fully appreciate - such films as Videodrome, Dead Ringers, Naked Lunch and Crash, all absolutely excellent. He's never had a film nominated for BP or BD either, which is a total shame - he deserved that recognition more than once.

Cronenberg is a critic and festival darling but oddly not an awards darling.

How can you plug Alan Parker and forget Fame and Pink Floyd The Wall?
