RIDDICK' LEADS TUESDAY WITH $1.65MSeptember 11, 2013 12:03 PM

by Daniel Garris

Universal's Riddick grossed $1.65 million on Tuesday to lead the daily box office for a fifth consecutive day. The third installment of the Vin Diesel led sci-fi franchise increased a solid 18 percent over Monday's performance. Riddick has grossed $22.08 million in its first five days of release. That is slightly below pre-release expectations and places the film 24 percent behind the $29.10 million five-day start of 2004's The Chronicles of Riddick.

Lee Daniels' The Butler held steady in second with $0.922 million. The early awards season hopeful from The Weinstein Company was up a healthy 39 percent over Monday and down 32 percent from last Tuesday. The Butlerhas grossed an impressive $92.99 million through 26 days of release; leaving the film just $7.01 million away from reaching the $100 million domestic milestone.

We're the Millers was up 34 percent and one spot over Monday to place in third on Tuesday with $0.772 million. Warner's break-out comedy starring Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis was down just 27 percent from last Tuesday. The five-week total for We're the Millers stands at $124.96 million.

Lionsgate's Instructions Not Included was down 12 percent and one place from Monday to land in fourth with $0.514 million. The Eugenio Derbez comedy vehicle has been holding up especially well thus far, but yesterday's lackluster daily hold was an exception to that trend. With that said, Instructions Not Included was still only down 25 percent from last Tuesday. The twelve-day total for Instructions Not Included stands at a strong $21.46 million

That article by Dan Garris is giving a back handed complement to Riddick while still trying to push the narrative it's doing bad. That's how I read his article. When A-it is more like Pitch Black B-didn't have a comparable budget to Chronicles and C-is an installment far enough removed from the last that to an entire movie going population this is essentially a first film.

On a $38m budget RIDDICK is doing well and will likely get a sequel should Vin want to do one.

I expect the drop tomorrow will look harsh because the increase today was so great, pendulum swinging time.

On a side note, The CONJURING is already gone and while it more than made the amount of $$$ it should've, I sort of wished they would've saved it for October.. What's coming out in October??? No PA5???

Instructions not included was the only movie in the top 10 that decreased.

Is that a sign?

Mostly a sign that it isn't making any money in Canada, but we already knew that anyway.

It's not even playing here except in a few places in Toronto and maybe Vancouver.
