DKR overtakes Dark Knight to reach $487.8m international

Warner Bros’ third Batman film became the biggest of the franchise outside North America at the weekend as it clung on to its top berth for the fifth consecutive weekend thanks to an estimated $20.6m haul from 61 markets.

The latest running total for The Dark Knight Rises means it has surpassed by some way the $469.7m final tally posted by The Dark Knight.

The film added $2.2m in the UK for $77.7m after five weekends, $2m in France for $27.7m after four, $2m in Brazil for $23.6m after four, $1.7m in Australia for $40.5m after five, $1.4m in Germany for $29m after four, $1.4m in Mexico for $28.7m after four and $1m in Japan for $21.5m after four.

The Dark Knight Rises will soar past $500m by the end of its run with launches set for China on Aug 27 and Italy on Aug 29.

    [*]Total Recall added $19m from 5,900 screens in 53 markets through Sony Pictures Releasing International to push the early running total to $58.2m.

South Korea generated $5.2m from 439 where the film was the top Hollywood release. This was one of several notable opening weekends that featured France on $3.5m from 524 and Brazil on $2m from 448.

Total Recall added $2.3m in the second weekend in Russia from 1,100 for $10.6m and $1.2m from 411 in Japan for $9.2m. Mexico has generated $3.9m after two.

    [*]The Bourne Legacy brought in an estimated $18.2m through Universal Pictures International from 2,042 venues in 18 territories this weekend as the spy thriller climbed to an early $28.1m running total.

The film opened in five territories led by a $7.4m number three debut in 498 UK sites including $3.9m in previews and opened at number one in Australia on $4.9m from 251 and 37% market share.

The Bourne Legacy opened in third place in Spain on $2.5m from 353 including $1m in previews. There are 45 territories to open over the next several months and next week’s new markets include Mexico and Argentina.

R-rated comedy Ted added $11.8m from 2,750 theatres in 26 territories for $138.4m and a global tally of $213.1m. The film added $3.1m in the UK from 456 theatres for $34.5m after three weekends and stayed top in Germany for the third consecutive weekends as $2.8m from 589 boosted the score to $20.6m.

Universal released The Expendables 2 in Italy and Russia where the action adventure opened top in both markets on high scores. It grossed $2m from 259 in Italy and a mighty $7.9m from 750 in Russia.ParaNorman stands at $7.6m following a $2m haul from 940 venues in nine territories

    [*]Fox International reported that Ice Age: Continental Drift grossed $10.1m from 7,055 screens in 58 markets as the running total climbed to a formidable $647.3m.

The animated spectacular added $2.7m from 820 from the fourth weekend in China to rank third and stand at $60.2m. It has reached $57.7m in Germany after seven, $49.9m in France after eight, $47.8m in Russia after six, $43.2m in the UK after six and a sensational $29.4m in Argentina after eight.

Prometheus crossed $200m to reach $201.9m, while Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter stands at $44.5m and Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Dog Days is at an early $8.8m.

    [*]DreamWorks Animation’s Madagascar 3 added $5.7m from 2,226 cinemas in 42 territories through Paramount Pictures International in the eleventh weekend to stand at $352.3m.

The film added $1.5m in Japan from 176 in the third weekend for $18.2m and has generated $8.3min Poland after the same amount of time and $10.3m in Spain after four. The Dictator stands at $110m and Katy Perry: Part Of Me $6.6m.

    [*]Lionsgate International reported that Step Up Revolution added $9.2m from 2,700 screens in 33 territories for $46.3m, including grosses from Universal markets. Leading markets are the CIS on $8.1m, Australia on $4.7, France on $3.5m and the UK on $2.8m.

It is annoying trying to predict OS grosses for a lot of films this summer due to the staggered release dates.Madagascar 3, The Lorax, Total Recall, Ted, Expendables 2, Bourne Legacy...etc are hard to predict their total OS gross as the markets slowly drip in $$$ here and there.Every film should just unleash OS like IA4 and TASM. Makes everything much easier for us!

Makes everything much easier for us!

All you have to do is open IMDB release dates page and look for the release dates of major markets. :)

Yes I know all the release dates from IMDB but that does not really help in predicting the final OS gross when releases are spread out over many months. Like Madagascar 3 and Ted for example are hard to predict due to staggered release dates.Just a first world problem. :P

Not surprised The Expendables 2 flopped here in the UK.The TV shots and promotional items were cheesy.

They're supposed to be.UK wasn't a strong market for the first so I didn't expect much this time around either. But this is still below what I had hoped for.
