Guardians of the Galaxy OS Thread($768M WW Total )

So $700m WW is happening. Now we'll depend on China to get to $750m.

$740M is locked and the floor to me.

        1) $30M for current foreign markets + what is left in the tank in the domestic front.

        2) $80M for China + Italy

Whenever the only interesting box office news within a week are the weekend report and ScreenDaily's Friday morning report, as it has been for the last few weeks, that's when things get really boring. No records, no nothing. Even Guadians has slowed down significantly and it's another two weeks until China...

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY: $325.1M Overseas Total / $644.2M Global Total #GuardiansOfTheGalaxy

I think in retrospect, Thor: TDW's worlwide gross was actually nothing more than average. Cap 2 and Guardians has surpassed it. Was it the outside-summer release date? Was it because of being squished between Gravity and Catching Fire? Maybe, but also it seems Thor isn't as bankable as the other two.

Basicly, the two main markets did much lesser than for CATWS and GOTG (granted it does $80+M in China).

TTDW did $206M in the US.  But it also did $55M in China, which was not only lesser than CATWS, TASM2 and DOFP but also lesser than previous CBMs within the last 18 months pre TTDW release, aka TA, IM3, MOS, TDKR and TASM2 (both released during the same date),

Compared to CATWS, that's  $50M lesser in the US and $60M lesser in China.

So removing China from the picture and you have TTDW basicly edging both GOTG and CATWS on the foreign front.

For some strange reasons, on the foreign front, it just really underperformed solely in China compared to other CBM and was in better position than both CATWS and GOTG to reach $500M overseas, if it wasn't for China underperformance.

Globally Thor appeal seems to be second to IM when it comes to the MCU if China is hopefully proven a punctual anomaly with TTDW.   Thor has had the biggest foreign gross edging slightly IM when it comes to the first movie release.   So it's foreign appeal is there.  It just needs a great movie and finally a breakout in China like most CBM are experiencing these days.

As for the US, granted it was less stellar than both CATWS and GOTG, i believe, CF, Frozen and then Hobbit, killed its mometum prematurely.

It's much simpler than that. Cap 2 and GOTG are good movies. TDW isn't.

You're right. But the reason for its underperformance in China is Gravity and CF:

It was doing great until week 2 and then in week 3 it fell 75%.

In a previous version with estimates, Deadline said the GotG earned $4M over the weekend and $325.1M in total.

When they reported actuals they said $4.2M and $330.2M in total.

How can a change of $0.2M in the weekend gross cause a $5.1M increase in the ONA total.

We know it had made $321.3M by Wednesday according to ScreenDaily, and even if it reached $323.2M by Thursday, it would need $7M over the weekend to reach what Deadline claims.

325-330 from NA, 333-340 from existing OS markets, 7-10 from Italy (for nice round numbers).  That puts it at 665-680m.  Add in Thor2's china number and it's at 720-735.  Avengers China number puts it at 750-765.  I'd say that's the upper limit.

Edit, very soft drop everywhere this weekend, seems like the upper end is certain, $670 without China or Italy.

Can't wait for Guardians in China! I hope the wait pays off. In my opinion, the condition is similar to Frozen. It's release is coming off a record holiday week, with many Hollywood movies being released shortly afterwards. It is an original property - like Frozen - and it has great word of mouth and was highly successful commercially - at least in North America. Given that it's a Marvel film in 3D with a lot of action, it's definitely more appealing than Frozen to the Chinese. $70M very likely; higher is possible.
