Welcome to the Hourglass Pictures Comic Con Panel for Y9!

11:30: Hourglass Pictures Preisdnet Michelle Haywood comes to the stage, proud to welcome the attendees and her guest panelists, stating how excited she is for her first Comic Con as head of the studio. They have a lot of exciting new works to show off, so we will cut right to the chase.

11:32: Chances are you’ve heard a bit about Parallels, which is coming out very soon. Director Josh Trank and stars Eva Green and Tom Hardy come up to discuss his film to much applause.

11:33: Trank welcomes everyone, saying how excited he is that his film is finally releasing. Trank says that the film, having been shot partially with IMAX cameras, is a true sight for eyes, and playing with the potential for other parallel universes has been both a joy and a burden. The potential of this field is explored both profoundly and even humorously at times, given the sheer surrealism of some worlds. What it ultimately goes to, is this reutilization to just how small we are, both in terms of size and potential. That’s not to say the film is a downer, in fact, it’s far from it. It will push audiences to really think about what could exist beyond what we know, and how far we as a species can reach out, and how we react to what we learn. It’s a film that has it all – emotion, action, thought, humor, and more, and I can’t wait to show it off.

11:36: Eva Green then discusses her character, Kayla. She is an army doctor, longing to return to her husband and 4-year old daughter. She is then offered the chance to participate in this parallel dimension project, Project Jump, in order to secure a financial future for her daughter. She’s intelligent and resourceful in dire situations, yet there’s also a sense of vulnerability and longing to her character as well. She’s incredibly well written.

11:38: Going into this operation with her is my character, Justin. He sees this operation as a chance to redeem himself to his dying father, who never saw him as more than a screw-up. As a member of the army, he has always tried to continue pushing himself, but he feels as though this is finally his chance to do something fantastic for the world.

11:40: A clip is now presented from the film, meant to show more than the action-focused marketing. The scene focuses on Kayla and Justin, wearing suits somewhat similar to astronauts, waking up in a large field of grass. Justin comments that the jump wasn’t quite as soothing as he had hoped. “This is a scientific experiment, not Cedar Point. Let me help you up.” Kayla lifts up Justin, as she looks on a fairly bizarre city skyline. Kayla takes off her helmet, realizing that the air is safe. Justin does the same. The grass they are standing on suddenly changes from green to yellow, a method used for detecting anomalies above the land, as a farmer who owns the land finds them. “What the hell are you doing in my land?” Kayla and Justin run away in an “Oh shit!” moment, eventually getting to the road. “I guess people are a-holes in every universe, huh?” Justin remarks. They then see a flying car rush down the country road, as Kayla tells Justin that they’re hitching a ride.

11:43: The clip ends with laughter and applause, and Josh Trank tells the audience to see Parallels, in theaters July 19th. Huge applause as the Q&A begins.

11:44: Q&A: The film looks visually stunning even without 3D, given its powerful cityscapes (in parallel worlds and ours) and some really creative designs for other worlds. The main motives of the characters in this mission is unclear, but the movie will explain it all. The cast will also include Noomi Rapace, Vincent Karthaiser, Ed Harris, Emily Browning, Jennifer Connoley, Matt Bomer and Cate Blanchett. Their roles have not been fully specified, but Trank said that Browning and Karthaiser would be strong scene stealers and potential contenders for supporting acting award. Karthaiser is playing the spearheader of the project with some ulterior motives, while Emily Browning plays a Punk-ish girl living in a parallel world. Cliff Martinez is also attached to score.

I sure hope it lives up to the hype. :) Anyways, time for coverage of my second film!

11:51: Haywood comments that this was the hoped for reaction, and that they are excited to show off their next film, taken over by director James Bobin and star Darren Criss. It is Freddy Zapper & The Manifesto of Doom. Huge fangirling over the StarKid vet ensues. They begin by discussing how the film will take a more global approach, focusing on a comedic take on the Cold War. Dr. Strangelove, this ain’t, however. It’s going to contain more of the lunacy and heart that made the first film shine, also making a few twists around espionage and more mysterious monsters. Joey Richter and Lauren Lopez also come up to the stage, receiving cheers from StarKid fans, announcing that they will have roles as a pair of bumbling Soviet Agents. They decide to show off one of the original songs from the movie, “We’re All Gonna Die!”

11:53: The scene shows several everyday people after hearing about rumors of a Soviet Attack in the news. It has an ironically happy and upbeat tone.

Person #1: I hope you saw the news on the television,

Person #2: I did and it seems like something bad has begun.

Various Townsfolk: I hope you saw the news! You saw the news! x 2

Person #3: You see, they’re coming for us and we’ve gotta panic!

Person #4: The news is always true so this must be so manic!

Various Townsfolk: But what does it mean? What does it mean?

Townsfolk: (Chorus)

We’re all gonna die at the hands of a bomb!

Don’t you get that there’s no reason to be calm!

The world is out to get us so go cover up your knees,

The cold war is here, and we’re going to freeze!

*We then see three friends, Logan, Wendell, and Chasity are talking at her house. Well, more like singing.*

Chasity: I can’t believe (I can’t believe) (I can’t believe) they believe this!

Logan: One little scare (one little scare) (one little scare) can make thing piss!

Wendell: Maybe we better take at least a bit of care. This stuff is serious and we better beware!

Chasity: Oh look, the news are on! The news are on!

*The news comes on TV*

Newscaster:

We’re all gonna die, and it’s gonna hurt bad!

The soviets are planning to take all that we had!

The world will soon crumble, and so will you!

Trust my fear mongering, since all of it’s true!

*Several people run out into the street panicking*

Townsfolk: We’ve gotta find the bomb! We’ve gotta save the world! We’ve gotta make a change for every little boy and girl!

Chasity: We’ve gotta make some sense! / We’ve gotta clarify! / Why would they go after the average, normal girl and guy?

Townsfolk: They’re gonna go after the average, normal girl and guy!

Chasity: Oh, forget it!

Townsfolk: Chorus

*The people hold on freeze*

Chasity: I can’t believe (I can’t believe) (I can’t believe) they believe this!

Logan: One little scare (one little scare) (one little scare) can make thing piss!

Wendell: They’re getting caught (they’re getting caught) (they’re getting) in an abyss!

Townsfolk: And we’re going to die! (Everyone falls)

11:57: Huge laughter and applause at the song, while Bobin talks more about the film. It will feature the same cast as before (Criss, Allison Janney, John Malkovich, Anton Yelchin, Ezra Miller, Elizabeth Gilles, Jane Lynch), but with new names such as Joseph Gordon Levitt as President John F. Kennedy, Nathan Lane as a Russian scientist, Jeffrey Tambor as Nikita Khrushchev, Kristin Chenoweth as a stylish American agent, similar to Penelope in Wacky Racers and Lady Penelope in Thunderbirds, (And no, her name isn’t Penelope) and Jeremy Renner and Robin Williams in unnamed roles. (Chenoweth and Lane make guest appearances) Yep, it looks like quite an insane cast! Santino Fontana was initially cast, but he had to drop out due to productions on Broadway.

12:01: Bobin describes the film as a coming of age story set in the cold war – with scary monsters and ridiculous quirk, but not without some surprisingly heartfelt reflections on growing up, especially in regards to Freddy’s home world which he left behind. It’s another layer to the world and characters we created, and as we wrote it, we became more and more impressed. The first film was an experiment with more success than we imagined, and we’re taking it even further now. Freddy Zapper & The Manifesto of Doom opens on Friday, September 27th! Expect it to be as crazy as the first made you to expect, and then some!

12:05: The Q&A: Bobin has said that you can expect several cameos in the film, but they won’t exist in the form you might imagine. The film will maintain the campy 50s style of the original film, visuals updated only to reflect the new time jump in the film. There will be several original songs in this film as well, including one of the most outrageous concepts for a song there is. (Of course they’re not going to say it!) The producers declined to comment on Emma Stone’s character, an evil alien from Freddy’s planet, and her involvement in the sequel.

12:11: Billy Bob Thorton, dressed in costume as Santa Claus, greets the Hall H attendees in character, gaining much laughter. He explains that after getting caught doing some crap with Chuck Norris and Liam Neeson, he hasn’t had a whole lot of time to do his own stuff, but with those two a holes out of the way, he’ll be able to do whatever the hell he wants to with some new allies. You are going to see a ton of awesome s....tuff that’s going to happen in this movie. There’s bigger action, crazier characters, and even more madness. How I wish I had the ability to curse at Comic Con. *laughs*

12:16: Scott Sanders, the director of Santa Claus: Ultimate Badass 2 – Season’s Beatings takes over, saying how that seemed like a slippery slope. He has been excited to have this franchise from starting with the independent cult classic Black Dynamite, and he loved being able to keep with the campy action feel. This film will be no different, also going out of its way to joyously playoff the satirical riffs of the Chuck Norris & Liam Neeson franchise, which has helped the Y5 film gain much more popularity after its fair box office run. The film follows Santa trying to save The North Pole and his friends from a deranged man, Frank, stuck on the naughty list his whole life (Adrien Brody) who wants revenge at all costs. It’s a fairly hilarious story, and these characters are so much fun. Mrs. Claus (Mila Kunis) has a particularly interesting side plot, in which her ex-girlfriend (Claire Holt) struggles to determine whether to get back with her, as she is currently dating Frank. This is just the tip of the iceberg.

12:20: A special trailer for the film is released, showing some of the insane action set pieces for the film. This includes an aerial fight involving an Apache Helicopter and Santa’s Sleigh, an Ice Wizard (Tommy Wiseau) skewering his enemies. There are also brutal candy cane snowfights, tanks going through Santa’s Workshop, sleigh dogs running through an explosion, and more. It’s looking to be even more outrageous than the first, and the crowd is eating it up like figgy pudding.

12:23: Q&A: Mila Kunis, Adrien Brody, and Tommy Wiseau take questions. Brody says that he’s just a complete a-hole in the movie, the kind of person who kicks puppies and stomps on kittens. You’ll love rooting against him. Wiseau declines to comment, trying to make forced references to The Room. This is a little bit awkward for everyone. Kunis then describes the film, saying how it was one of the most exciting and hilarious films she has ever worked on, and it’s probably her best film where she plays an attractive Mrs. Claus. *laughter* It’s an experience unlike any other that needs to be seen with a giant crowd. Sanders also said to accept heavy metal versions of classic Christmas songs in the soundtrack, so that’s also awesome. Dolph Lundgren, Holt, and Samuel L. Jackson were not available to take questions.

12:28: We now move on to The Light Carrier’s Tale, directed by Sam Mendes. Elizabeth Debicki appears as the main character, Victoria, a young pharmacist struggling to support her newborn daughter, meeting with a mysterious stranger who tries to help her. This stranger is played by David Tennant, who enters to much applause. His character, Timothy, is part of a special section of humanity known as The Light Carriers, who gain longer lives as long as they continue to do acts of good for their world and their people. Timothy has been born in 18th century London, and he has built hospitals and saved several lives in his life, but some on his colleagues, including Idris Elba and Greta Gerwig, have grown more disillusioned towards the human condition, and their time begins to come. Timothy has also had these feelings, but he believes that this girl may be his first true human connection in a while.

12:32: It looks to be a very special film, one that reflects on humanity as it is, has been, and will be, as well as the true meaning of what doing good for the world is. In some ways, it acts as a deconstruction of heroism in society, as the light carriers are almost never known in the same way our media’s heroes seem to be. It’s a truly grand yet intimate tale, as life affirming as it is heartbreaking, and it might just be one of the studio’s most profound films to date. The cast also stars Helen Mirren as a past lover of Timothy, Dave Franco stars as Victoria’s emotionally abusive and financially unstable husband, and Steven Yuen as Debicki’s adopted brother, among other, yet to be announced roles. John Hurt’s involvement is particularly interesting.

12:36: No videos, just a direct Q&A: The film will be composed by Thomas Newman with an original song by Regina Spektor, and Roger Deakins will be responsible for Cinematography. The film has a budget of around $100m, and the fantasy-based aspects of the Light Carriers are being kept under wraps, but are said to have a fairly minimalist style. Mendes really did an excellent job with his direction, and a lot of the film is fairly telling of his theatrical background. There isn’t a plethora of available details at this time, but it should be an extremely interesting film. It opens on Christmas.

12:40: We now move on to Y10, with our first film being the sequel to the beloved Y8 romantic black comedy, A Love To Die For. The sequel will be called A Love Worth Killing For, follows Brad Dennison (Channing Tatum) and Gloria Mariato (Jennifer Lawrence) as they go on the run after a crazed police officer (Bradley Cooper) tries to hunt them down. The movie looks to be a mix of an action caper and a road trip movie, and they have to deal with a whole lot of garbage that comes their way in order to clear their names and move on with their lives. Things only get harder when the family’s emergency fortune gets unleashed, and it becomes somewhat akin to It’s A Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad World.

12:43: The film is said to be more like the first, combining a fairly heartfelt romance story, driven by the sheer charm, humor, and chemistry of Tatum and Lawrence, and add a chaotic plot that drives itself away from typical rom com tropes. These characters aren’t fully in love yet, but they’re just stuck together for another crazy trip. You’ll see several other actors, such as Lupita Nyong’o, Julia Roberts, Kevin Spacey, and more as things get increasingly crazy, perhaps enough to give Chuck Norris and Liam Neeson a run for their money. Steve Buscemi and Chris Pratt may also return in smaller roles. Director Greg Mottola says that he can’t wait to release it, and that the film will be released on June 19th, Y10.

12:47: It looks like another cut to a Q&A, but Bradley Cooper, Channing Tatum and Jennifer Lawrence appear to huge applause! They describe the film as having both great comedy and a lot of heart, while Bradley Cooper says that in some ways, it’s a bit like Guardians of the Galaxy in that regard. It seems like the film is going to defy several tropes, much as the first film did, and it looks like a truly original and fun sequel. The budget has also risen to $90m, which should profit greatly even if it does less than the first film’s $320m worldwide gross.

12:51: Huge excitement as Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino take the stage to push Spark: Supernova. The final installment of this series has been long awaited, and we’re getting first wind of clear details here. The film apparently follows the rebirth of the Karaths, a race of aliens that disappeared a thousand years ago, with the intent of wiping out the society of The Galactic Federation. Alex and his allies must unite the various alien races in the galaxy, which have slowly become more and more divided since the events of Spark: Ignition, and find a way to save the galaxy once and for all. The battle will be more than he could possibly imagine, and it will push him and his friends, physically and emotionally, to the limit. Alex, especially, will discover a shocking link between him and the Kariaths, as well as the reason he truly became a galactic hero. The film, while more somber and intense than the first two, will maintain its spirit profoundly. It’s one of the most ambitious films our studio has done, and it’s going to end the series with a bang.

12:55: The finale, set two years after the events of Spark 2 and opening with Alex and Zenta’s wedding, will also tie up several loose ends developed in the film series, but does not necessarily address matters raised in the animated series that premiered in Y5. Characters from each installment will return, and the cast is fairly huge this time around. Paul Dano, Bryce Dallas Howard, Benedict Cumberbatch, Steven Barr, Jeremy Shada, Chloe Moretz, Brie Larson, Mark Strong, and Dante Basco have all been confirmed to return. New characters include Peter Dinklage as the current chairman of Galactic Defense, after Alex chooses to decline the offer made to him by Galactic society, Shohreh Aghdashloo as the leader of the Karaths, Chiwetel Eijiofor and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as a Karath couple sympathetic to galactic society wishing to help Alex, Charlie Day as a rodent-esque alien mechanic who becomes a valuable part of Alex’s team, Julianne Moore as a human freelance reporter, and Jean Dujardin as a Talirad weapons designer who just happens to be Ezen’s estranged brother. (Another alien lizard! Woot! Also, you must have quite the parents to make Cumberbatch and Dujardin brothers...)

1:00: It’s time to watch a trailer! Hooray!

MAY 22ND, Y10

IN 2D, 3D, AND IMAX 3D

1:03:The trailer got big applause, as the Q&A takes over. Apparently, the post credits scene from Spark 2, in which Welan is alive, has been discarded and will not affect the third movie, as his revival only existed in a first draft, and it took away impact from the new relationships built. The film is also expected to be huge in scale, with a run time of around 2.5 hours and a production budget of around $200 million. This is the most expensive film to date from Hourglass Pictures, in other words. The film will be composed once again by John Powell, whose musical motifs are being amplified to epic levels. The film will have a great focus on family as a theme, which has been one of the biggest driving themes of the franchise, giving the film a strong emotional core but showing the various ways in which family exists, some more atypical than others, and it will maintain the same mix of humor, drama, and action that made the first two films so great. Finally, Konietzko comments that the film will also be released on several 70mm prints, so as to create a truly special cinematic experience. Huge applause ensues as the section on the film ends.

1:12: We then see the brief announcement for Steven Spielberg’s Y10 project, a drama that takes place on a global scale but with an intimate premise, The Parting Tale. The film follows a dying novelist (Richard Dreyfuss), famous for experimenting with all genres and displaying a proud sense of humanism, as he sends his daughter (Jessica Chastain) on a global journey to help him complete his final story before he dies, and he wants it to be his greatest work to date, something truly special. Other stars have yet to be announced, but it should be a truly incredible and global feature, centered on the power of storytelling and the love that exists in family. It seeks to recreate the style of idealism created in films like Forrest Gump, The Shawshank Redemption, and Breaking Away to contemporary audiences, while still maintaining a modern spirit. Not much else will be said about the project, but it sounds very promising. Spielberg also comments that after working on a lot of large budget action blockbusters (refusing to comment on Obliteration’s indefinite delay), he is glad to create something different, as well.

And now for the last segment of my panel!

1:18: The panel looks to be wrapping up, but it seems as though a special announcement has yet to be made. Perhaps it could be the Half Life movie that HGP recently gained the rights to. Or maybe Hand Drawn Heroes 2. The video footage seems to go up on the screen, and a trailer begins to play.

1:20: Here is the trailer:

HOURGLASS PICTURES

*We see a battle of samurai and a feudal Japanese villiage on fire through several short cuts*

*A samurai wakes up slowly, as if having a bad dream. He is laying inside a tent in the forest, waking up and looking at a fairly futuristic city in the background*

Samurai: He is coming.

*The ground begins to shake, and the Samurai gets his sword ready.*

Samurai: I am not afraid of you, and you will pay for all that you have done.*

*Trees begin to shake wildly, eventually falling over and nearly hitting the samurai, who narrowly avoids them*

*A giant spirit comes out of the ground, and the samurai gets into battle position*

The Spirit’s Voice: So.....we meet again.

*We cut to the spirit, it is Aku, in a fearful, CGI form. He resembles a mix of a dragon and a demon.*

Aku: ....Jack.

*Jack jumps up to attack him, and Aku slithers towards him, about to strike.*

SAMURAI JACK

COMING Y11 IN 3D AND IMAX 3D

1:25: The crowd has gone absolutely insane, especially as Darren Aronofsky comes up on stage. Indeed, he is directing a movie of Samurai Jack, depicting the end of the titular hero’s battle with the evil sorcerer, Aku. He is excited to direct a big blockbuster after obtaining more mainstream success in Extrasensory and Resonance (we’ll leave Kansas out of this). Tadanobu Asano will play Jack, while Ken Watanabe will portray Aku. Filling Mako’s shoes will be no light task, but the studio has great hopes for Watanabe. No other news have been released, but the filmmakers are no doubt excited for this project, which should undoubtedly be one of the most exciting films by the studio. Genndy Tartakovsky has also signed on to produce and co-write the film.

1:29: Well, that was the Hourglass Pictures panel! So many big stars and promising movies! We’re signing off now, but enjoy the rest of Comic Con!
