(You didn't even answer my exemple and didn't see the "science plays some major role in the plot" part.)

Imagine Gravity was actually about Clooney and Bullock falling in love with each other and then breaking up. So is it scifi or a romcom?

Yes that would be romcom. Even Junior is sci-fi.

OMG! Space travel as in faster than light travel to different systems and such. Just because you actually travel a tiny bit amount through space in order to get to the ISS doesn't make that sci-fi *lol*.

Says space travel and then you add faster than light to different system. While the definition just says space travel.

Maybe you are the silly one if you think Gravity is surely not sci-fi.

So please stop comparing Gravity with 2001 A Space Odyssey. Since Gravity is not even a sci-fi film.

Which one is it? Sci-fi or not sci-fi?

I of course know it is .... was just trying to show how ridiculous it would be to call Gravity not sci-fi in the other way. The nasayers think Gravity is not sci-fi because all the techs in it do exist in our world. So in their theory, Inception wouldnt be sci-fi as well if the whole movie is just someguy's dream, since anything can happen and exist in dreams and everybody dreams everyday.

In that case, I have a theory that all of Star Wars is just a dream. Same with Star Trek, Blade Runner, Aliens, and every supposedly sci-fi movie ever. Sci-fi doesn't exist!!!

Gravity IS a Sci-Fi movie.

And if they'd just add "Based on real events", it is not despite being the same movie.

Take an example. 2 movies with the same premise: Sending an animal on Earth's orbit in a space shuttle nowadays.

Let's follow people's logic saying Gravity is scifi through and through:

- Movie A is about sending a dog in orbital space so by their logic Movie A is not scifi because it has been done.(See Laïka)

- Movie B is a movie about sending a raccoon in orbital space so by their logic it is scifi because it hasn't been done (Send a raccoon on orbit).

Both movies display the same science and technology that can send living mammals on orbit in our present day.

That classification is quite ludicrous.

I love all of this, but Gravity is sci-fi because by definition, everything that has space travel is sci-fi. I will just leave this thread now. I will come back after seeing the movie on October.

It's called Science FICTION for a reason, y'know?

It's called Science FICTION for a reason, y'know?

Everything about making storytelling movies is fiction you know. Even Apollo 13 taking liberties with reality (so fictional in parts) and yet not called a science fiction movie.

But people are using different denominations for movies that have the same settings and display the same technology. That's what people are bickering about. Everything that appears in Gravity do exist in our reality and is performed in our present day. The only thing that is fiction is " Shuttle dysfunction, debris, astronauts drifting" but the premise is nothing "science fictioney".

When a movie that features present day technology and science as a backdrop would not be considered a science fiction movie then? In 50 years, in 100 years?

So a movie featuring Iphone 5 is scifi?

'B' is science fiction, and 'A' is science fact. What is your problem?

Deep Impact is not sci-fi because asteroids hit Earth all the time. Shit happens when a big asteroid comes.

2012 is not sci-fi because earthquakes happen all the time, though in smaller ways.

I guess you didn't really grasp the content and theories displayed in both movies that are far to be really scientifically accurate then belong to science fiction realm.
