Problem is the things a lot of the critics are complaining about are exactly the kind of things that turn off the general audience, like the film being confusing, etc.

And do you automatically root for every family film that comes along?

No, but even if I did it shouldn’t matter to you.

I havent read the reviews for AWIT but it could still be a good movie that just didn't check off some boxes that critics were looking for. Like I said in my previous post, it's not like it's sitting at a 5% on RT.

There's also some genuinely positive reviews sitting in there, some from Top Critics.  Something to keep in mind, I think.

I think they sell sense of humor at walmart.

I was about to go back and edit my post with a "unless the guy is being sarcastic" qualifier.

Problem is, I have actually seen people on this site try to spin a bad reception into a favorable one.

And one guy in this thread was seriously cheering on Premium George's post...

I think a lot of folks are gonna be sleeping on this movie...I'll bet anyone in the casino that this movie is hitting $35M this weekend...25 pts, no big loss either way...

I mean maybe the reviewers are dead on, and maybe this isn't great (and maybe it's not even very good), but at the end of the day, for these movies that focus on a different majority audience than the 13-45 white male demo, they don't have to be.  These movies come fewer and farther between, so their audience gets a little more starved for the product.  I mean, after Wonder, what movie has been put out to appeal to both moms and kids as the major demos?  Peter Rabbit and Paddington weren't - one was definitely not for mom (even though it will now hit $100M) and one was definitely not for the kids (so mom passed, too).  (Maybe I'll give you Fifty Shades, and look how that's gonna hit $100M and break the normal sequel way worse curse).  And now also add the large appeal to the minority demo, another undeserved demo, which has had Black Panther and Coco, but that's about it there, too.  So, you've got 3 groups who've had 3-4 movies in 4 months?  I think there's gonna be some demand if this isn't horrific, and reviews seem to say it isn't...

I think what will really matter is if the film feels like it has a heart and if it has the spirit of the book.  Most of the GA for this will ignore a badly acted scene or a WTF scene here or there - they are used to them in animated movies - hello Storks - and fantasy and animated aren't that different - crazy stuff happens out of nowhere all the time, and you just roll with it...but the GA will want to feel good leaving the movie and feel good that they supported it...if this leaves a feel good, it can do very, very well...I mean, B&TB made over $500M with goodish, but not greatish, reviews...here, we aren't hoping for $500M:)...

The reviews so far are mixed.

It's sitting at 47% with a 5.2 avg but will very good reviews from Village Voice, NY Times, LA Times & NPR  (none of which grade the film so they don't factor into the avg)

Thing is, when a film is hyped as a revolutionary masterpiece as much as this film was, a mixed reception is not quite good enough.

And you have to read the reviews;a lot of what the critics are complaining about are exactly the things that turn off general audience. This film does not seem to anywhere near as "audience friendly" as "The Greatest Showman" a film which did decent box office with a very mixed reception.

Oh boy was that Time Mag cover over the top. A regular Disney fantasy movie was being treated like the most important film of the year.

Black Panther has been chosen already by black people and the media to push to the moon like how Get Out was last year. Too bad for Wrinkle not being released first before BP.

Umm...black people aren’t a monolith that choose one movie to push and support while sacrificing others. Individuals are capable of watching and supporting multiple movies that appeal to them for a variety of reasons.

It's all about the expectations. The higher the expectations, the more you have to deliver.

And if don't think this was not being hyped as a film that would change cinema, you have not been following the film very much. See the Time Magazine cover story in particular.

There was bound to be less excitement for Wrinkle after BP.
The same thing applied to Wonder Woman last year.

Nobody gave a crap about Justice League after Wonder Woman because her solo movie already came out.

One silly Time Magazine cover story does not a hype machine make.  I certainly haven't heard of OTT hype for this movie, and I've been following this thread pretty regularly.

If anything, this thread has been on pins-and-needles, worried that it would all blow up.
