Doesn't TMNT still have about 20 markets left, including China and UK, Japan and much of Europe?

Yes.

I hate Paramount for this. The movie only opens here on October 30, complete nonsense. I will most likely download it. Sad but true.

It s risky strategy to release a tentpole so late after the us release in this day and age, when TMNT is being released in Europe, a good blu ray rip will already be available all over the net.

I have no doubt it is gonna kill it. Maze Runner will get released in many of these markets at the same time of TMNT. Dracula is also getting an event movie push OS. TMNT is dead.

I agree with you. Disney absolutely has a franchise/tent pole model. They don't have a lot of mid-budget films. It's mostly big tent poles and a few smaller budgeted films (like Muppets Most Wanted). Other studios are definitely more willing to take risks on original movies these days. However, most big studios have a close to equal number of big tent pole films, so any extra movie released in a given year should give a studio a better shot at winning the year. WB has 14 movies released so far, and they have another 6-8 for the rest of the year. Fox has 10 with 6 more to be released this year. Disney has 10 with 3 more to be released this year. Fox and WB should finish ahead of Disney. Yet, Disney has 3 films that have grossed more domestically than any film that Fox has released this year. I just feel that the number of movies that a studio releases in a year has to be taken into account.

Yeah, Disney is easily the most profitable studio. Winning the year in pure gross doesn't matter when your movies are boasting better return for investment ratios than any other studios. (Especially when you consider merchandising)

Dead?  That's a rather odd way of looking at it.  Turtles will kill Maze Runner in most markets.

I don't think so. Places like UK and France, by the time TMNT opens there it will already be available online in good quality. Dracula and Maze Runner won't and both have a lot of hype. Kill was a bad word. They won't kill TMNT, but I think TMNT won't have very good results in those markets.

I think you are wrong.  Care to make a bet in the Casino thread?  :)

Everyone I know who was interested in TMNT has already downloaded or streamed it. By the time it comes out in the UK I imagine the BluRay rip will be out by then too.

It will definitely hurt. Unlike kids movies, where people watching the DVD rips probably weren't gonna see in cinemas, TMNT has an older fanbase that would have. An audience that will probably stick with the torrents and streams rather than pay for the exact movie on a bigger screen.

That will absolutely not happen :P

Wait, we are both in hot pursuit of Shawn...let's do a bet, just me and you in the Casino.  You say it won't do well in places like UK.  I say it will.  Lets decide on a number.

I can't decide on a number because I don't fully know how box office in the UK works. I just think it would have done much better had it opened in August.

Tombstones also opened here in the Philippines.

Anyway, cheers to modest budget for The Maze Runner! I hope the sequel will also have a a controlled budget like that :D

Looks like Dolphin Tale 2 will end around what Muppets Most Wanted did. So that's another family movie sequel this year performing below their predecessor (Muppets 2, Rio 2, Dragon 2, Planes 2 and now this)

I wouldn't be so certain about it being a poor release date CJohn. We're getting it during our October break from schools, and it's only competition is going to be The Maze Runner the week before and Book of Life the week after. And it's getting IMAX screens as well. They probably made a smart move taking it out of summer, just like Disney did in '09 with Up.
