dumb

What's dumb is the lessons studios took away from it (no civilians can ever die and big fights should stay very far away from population centers). I don't think audience reactions to the film itself were dumb because it's a reaction to the film as a film not the film's raw text. From roughly 2007 to 2018 a dominant mode in American blockbusters was laundering 9/11 disaster/action into big film set pieces. This was clearly true of Man of Steel.

Quote

There’s a sequence in which he cycles through a series of street-level closeups, showing the faces of random Metropolis citizens (whom we all read as New Yorkers, obviously) moments before a huge space laser starts destroying skyscrapers. In the montage that follows, Snyder observes as those same characters flee from the clouds of dust and rubble billowing down city streets. From the expressions on the extras’ faces to the ground-level view of such a cataclysm, these images directly reference/rip off the footage captured — and endlessly repeated on-air — by news crews following the collapse of the World Trade Center.

While superman fought zod in a way that felt disconnected from the carnage. Contrast that with say Superman returns which shows the expected superman action of zooming around saving people from the natural disasters. Simply watching the film for the first time in theaters it's also far from clear how intentional this was. I really think the most redeeming thing for Man of Steel is the first 5 minutes of BvS which hits you over the head saying this really is supposed to be superhero 9/11 (before...well...the rest of the film squanders that incredible opening).

Iron Man shoots down the turtle and it flops directly onto a big building.

But it's just an action figure shooting another action figure who falls down. The "man on the street" stuff shot (and mostly cut) from Avengers focused on a few specific individuals (like Whedon's Justice League's focus on the random family). People became afraid of doing something like this because Snyder's more ambitious swing basically failed to connect for audiences. If you don't aim to make a 9/11 homage, audiences might interpret your big central city brawl differently even if logically the same number of people die.

It’s crazy how much outcry against the destruction in MoS seemed to influence future Hollywood blockbusters. Even Marvel seemed to go out of there to avoid having the heroes fight in populated areas after that.

In light of recent news, I do think there's room for a Superman movie if Gunn nails it to really breakout at the box office.

They are too close to each other to not see it as a competition. So one of them will lose the battle, just like BvS and CW. Even if BvS had over $100M in profit, it's the universal consensus afterall.

The internet will be insufferable by next summer.

I think WB should move Superman to November 2025, the 7th November where Blade is scheduled is not going to happen and they have a November tentpole for the 21st November but November 7th would give 2 or 3 weeks in premium formats.

Mortal Kombat II could move up as it's wrapped and it's not as intense CGI work flow compared to something like Superman

This thread will possibly be closed when the first trailer hits and definitely during social media reactions and reviews dropping.

Dude, stop trying to start something. You kept saying the D&W thread was going get closed because of the reviews but it never did.

I see that snow setting. Will Superman's Fortress of Solitude be in this?:ohmygod:

I think that's the most logical reason. That's their first week in Svalbard, Norway. It's interesting Lex is there. Did they shoot the final scenes there?

SOme Fans seem intent on keeping and starting fan feuds.

In this case, the most stupid and obnoxiious fan feud of them all....Marvel vs DC.

I think the guy is right about one thing, though: the internet at least the geek part of it..is going to be toxic as next July draws nearer.
