Weekend Estimates: Insurgent 54m | Cinderella $34.5m pg 29

Recommended Posts

That $54M opening for Insurgent is crazazy. I'm sure the actuals will bring it down a couple mil, to maybe 52 and change. I believe boxoffice.com's original prediction, when this was first added to the long-range forecast, was $53M.

Yeeess

Sequels usually are too more front load, but it is not being

Cinderella second weekend WW - With China and without - Japan - $253M

Maleficent second weekend WW - Without China and Japan - $336M

Goodbye Baby

Cinderella hasn't opened in the UK or Australia yet and yeah cost half as much to produce.  It's going to make Disney more $.

The Jolie stans seem genuinely upset that people compared Cinderella to Maleficent. It's not quite at "Marvelites in the Fant4stic thread" levels but it's up there

It does serve as a reminder of how insufferable they were

I didn't think this would be too terribly frontloaded, at least not much more than the first. It's a sequel, yes, but the sequel to a movie that didn't quite blow up, so to speak, so there's not a tremendous amount of anticipation attached to it. If these numbers hold up or are even a little close, then people weren't in any more of a hurry to see this one than they were the last one.

Insurgent skewed towards female moviegoers (60 percent) and towards moviegoers under the age of 25 (55 percent). The film received a healthy A- rating on CinemaScore.

Insurgent grossed $3.6 million from IMAX locations, which represented 6.7 percent of the film's overall grosses this weekend.

It's the same or a little less than Maleficient though that had higher summer aided weekdays. So $128m vs $122m totals after the second w/e.

I still find it meh. A 50% drop for a family film isn't really good. It seems INSURGENT has affected it. 200 M is 50/50 now. However, it's doesn't mean it hasn't done well. I was just expecting a higher second weekend.

When it comes to reporting precise box office figures, Lionsgate has always been fair, meaning they don’t just grab for the Sunday headline. Currently, per industry estimates if Insurgent falls short of its reported $54M, it will be at $53.3M, which isn’t too shabby. http://deadline.com/2015/03/insurgent-weekend-box-office-divergent-shailene-woodley-the-gunman-1201396216/

Deadline seem to be Lionsgate's spin department, especially after the way they spun MJ1's OW. Lionsgate estimated Catching Fire to take the 2D OW record, made Divergent at 56M last year and overestimated MJ1 for the headlines and now Insurgent is 101M WW as per estimates.

Anyone else remember the "threequelitis" article for MJ1 :P

Yes, Mockingjay doesn’t have the IMAX uptick like CF did a year ago. Paramount needed those hubs to show off the jawdropping space and tidal wave scenes inInterstellar. Back out the $12.2M IMAX bow from CF‘s opening weekend of $158.07M and you’re left with largely a 2D take of $145.87M. Bad weather? Nah, Buffalo, NY was never a B.O. fountainhead. The soft domestic box office is a factor: Mockingjay and Transformers 4 are the only films to open past $98M this year; while 2013 boasted three $10oM-plus openers and 2012 had four.

Mockingjay’s lower than franchise-record opening simply boils down to threequel-itis, a common, cyclical trend that effects a franchise’s third installments at the domestic B.O. without any major reason other than that they’re the third chapter. When Threequelitis strikes, as in the supposed case of Mockingjay, does it mean the franchise is broken? No. Does it mean that fans are put off? Hell, no. Hunger Games fans have all the time between now and Dec. 12 when the next tentpole arrives, Fox’s Exodus: Gods and Kings.

They both appeal strongly to the female demo of course Insurgent affected it like TFIOS affected Maleficent in it's second weekend last year.  The drop will probably be in the 30s% next weekend then Easter week and w/e should give it a nice boost and another soft drop.

I forgot Easter. 200 M is still possible.
