The reviews are pretty mixed overall. Again, not surprised. The book was rather trashy.

Tate Taylor always seemed like a strange choice to me for an R rated thriller anyways. I'd expect a Disney movie out of him way before this.

The lone creative element to command coercive interest here is Elfman's score, which employs sonic currents of tonal irregularities, pulsations and mood instigators rather than melodies, typical tension tropes or any of his trademark gambits from the Tim Burton collaborations. He almost makes the film seem good from time to time.

The book has a reputation of being trashy because all thrillers with female leads get labelled as such. It's a good book.

We're still seeing this regardless of the reviews. The book was entertaining to read as a diverting beach novel, and I always root for Emily to succeed (yes, even when she does something that never even remotely sounded like a good idea like The Huntsman: Winter's War).

Btw I still this opening with $30M, mixed reviews be damned. It's by far the month's buzziest title, and the only other movie that's really being predicted to make a significant gross is Inferno, which isn't until the end of the month.
