760m wouldn't be enough to pass AVATAR, that's all I'm saying. ;)

750M would be enough to pass his first run. It is not gonna do it anyway. I am hoping for it to pass the Avengers. Don't care about anything else. Avatar and Titanic can stay at number 1 and 2.

I've seen Avatar like 9 times. And most of those weren't in the cinemas. good movie. Cameron knows how to work his shit.

Avatar is one of the best executed blockbusters of the last 10 years. Unfortunately, the plot and characters are a bit too conventional for some folks, hence why they rag on it. However, that discounts the fact that tried and true archetypes are fine when they're executed that damn well. The 3D spectacle was just the icing on the cake that really set it over the edge WOM wise. WOM would have been great regardless though. Yup, Cameron knows his shit.

So many blockbusters these days are shapeless messes. it amazes me that there are people here willing to heap praise on said movies (all the marvel for example) and then bitch and whine about avatar's script. it's incredible.

I can't prove this (you can't prove otherwise either), but without the 3D Avatar wouldn't have even sniffed the 400M, let alone the 760M DOM. Everyone was curious because 3D was a new thing for the mainstream (even if 3D movies were already a thing, no big live action movie had used it before). When people started seeing it and said the 3D and visuals were amazing, that sealed the deal. 3D was new and unique. You couldn't replicate that at home.

It opened to a 152m 6-day! No chance of that without some heavy nostalgia goin' on.

On OW yeah, but it didn't helped his legs, so no, nostalgia doesn't make people like a movie.

But why people trash Avatar for its tried archetypes, isn't  what 99% all other blockbusters are doing anyway ?

Why this criticism always comes up specifically for Avatar, I never understood that.

Man, Boyhood, Her, Birdman were full of terrible clichés and archetypes and nobody bitches about it.
