I love you Blanks, you know that, but I have to say, this attitude is rotten and kind of childish. No one is forcing you to watch Minions. I know you can't go anywhere without seeing them, but so? I'm not a Harry Potter fan, but I remember when I couldn't go anywhere without seeing Harry Potter this, Harry Potter that. I didn't nag about it all day long, I just focused on the properties that I did love and what they were doing.

You'll always be a cool dude with me, but sometimes you gotten learn when to shift the attitude to something else. You ranting about Minions all day on BOF is not going to stop Universal from exploiting them. Theyve already made 2 and half billion dollars off them. They'll probably still be around when our kids are young. It is what it is. Don't waste your energy nagging about it, let's shift focus now, my man.

I understand the sentiment, and typically would agree. HOWEVER, this forum in general needs to realize that box office doesn't equal quality in any sense, and opinions don't equal a person's merit. Until then, I feel like my Minions nagging is just as valid as baumer's Pixar hate, or pretty much everyone except Baumer's Transformers hate.

Also "They'll probably still be around when our kids are young"... God, I hope not.

People need to get over it. Fury Road was great, but it wasnt the second coming of Christ. We all should be happy Mad Max even made $100M in the first place. $150M is a HUGE overachievement.

This I do agree with. It wasn't even in my top 15 of the summer; 110M+ is impressive, let alone 150M.

Reporter: "Do you feel bad about releasing the Minions onto the global public? Do you feel responsible for the madness and saturation, driving people insane?"

Pierre: "Haha fuck no, man. It's not like I released crystal meth or nuclear weapons or 3D on the world. Gotdamn."

Actually, haven't the DM movies been the only ones doing consistently well in 3D? So in a way, he's enabling 3D.

:P

What's interesting about it...Shrek 2 might have hit $120m opening in 2004 if it opened on a Friday. So Shrek 3 didn't even increase that much (if at all) from the previous movie's opening, despite incredible legs and amazing WOM for Shrek 2.

Probably closer to $112-113 million. But with inflation, Shrek the Third would have just barely increased... or equaled Shrek 2.

Shrek the Third would have done at least $340 million DOM if it had been a halfway decent movie... could have easily won the year if it was equal to the Puss in Boots spinoff lol.

SM3 could have done $375-400 million if it was halfway decent, also. POTC3 would have always dropped off, though... too much competition and the Memorial Day frontloadedness.

I just realized now BOM counts the 900k Thursday midnights of Shrek 3 separately. So... if Minions does 121.7M or more does it break the record officially?

Yes, but the problem with that is that if it breaks $121.7 but not the full OW with midnights, its true 3-day will still be lower due to the previews.

(Though to be completely fair, previews for animated movies were not a huge thing then - back then, most of that business Minions did on Thursday would have occurred on Friday, and the rest would have been accounted for in additional Sat/Sun spillover.)

If it opens over Thanksgiving 2017, this sadly won't happen. It will probably do $110-130 million over the 5 day, but the Wednesday OD would prevent the record. Its actual weekend would be $80-90 million.

During the summer of 2018? If it's on par with, or surpasses the original, $125-130 million OW is certainly possible.

I don't see why Incredibles 2 wouldn't open higher. This is the sequel that everyone wanted and want to see.

And it's a superhero-flick, so it will have its momentum.

druv10, I was going to add a remark about Shrek 3 being one of the biggest "goodwill from the last breakout movie" OWs, but couldn't figure out a way to phrase it. You're right, it shows how big Shrek 2 was, and how much goodwill it had, and how anticipated Shrek 3 was. (I meant it was a beast on OW, after all.)

People forget just how big Shrek 2 was. 75M+ admissions same ballpark as Avatar.

Average of the 3-day and 5-day is $118m. It was very backloaded because not very many people even knew about the Wednesday release. It was one of those last minute changes if I remember right.

That's why I wonder what it would have done over a proper 3-day opening. 120 very much in play under that scenario. Either way, the $118m average adjusted to $130m in 2007 dollars.

The Bahubali number is crazy, especially since it isn't even a Hindi movie. This crossed over in a big way within India as well by the looks of it.

That Inside Out Friday increase is crazy as well. Direct competition hurting it badly, else it was on track for a 24M+ weekend under normal circumstances.

Why? Just curious.

Because Toy Story and Finding Nemo are the holy grails of Pixar when considering popularity the Incredibles is also popular but its not as popular or recognized as Nemo/TS. Though it is a little more warranted than MU, so 90M is definitely game

That's what I heard, too.

Also, as I said, it was on a school week. Very few animated/family films open on a Wednesday outside of summer/holiday weeks, Shrek 2 seems to be a rare exception. (In terms of admissions, the biggest opening "school day/night" Wednesday for an animated kids/family film is actually Pokemon, and it only adjusts to $1m more than Shrek 2.)

And don't doubt Nemo, Tele. Incredibles is popular among young adults (many of whom were kids when the original came out), but I think Nemo is still popular among today's kids in a way Incredibles isn't.

IO opened above $90M... $90M is not just "game" for Incredibles 2... It's a lock.

I know this sounds crazy since the record is still standing 8 years later, but Shrek the Turd's opening was a bit of a letdown and a lot of people expected to hit 130+ for the opening based on SM3's 150+ number and the insane stuff that Shrek 2 accomplished with smaller ticket prices a few years earlier. I think there were 140+ numbers being thrown around on BOM too.
