Bad Boys: Ride or Die | June 7, 2024

The Reigning 2020 Domestic Box Office Champ is back to get the Summer really started.   "Bad Boys" hopes to join the "John Wick" franchise and have all sequels increase from the previous film. ( They kept the budget in check too.    Every "Bad Boys" film has opened #1 in the Box Office.   Obviously this is Will's first Big movie since the Oscar Drama so we shall see how audiences react.  "Emancipation" was a straight to streaming but would have been theatrical had the drama not happened (He probably would have been nominated too).

So I don't really count that as his comeback.  That movie was already done when the drama happen.   We all saw how "Men In Black: International" and "ID4-R", and "Suicide Squad" all failed to perform without Will Smith.   "Bad Boys" is what got his Superstar Movie career rolling.  Will has had a lot of Summer Success.  This is the right blockbuster at the right time.   "Bad Boys for Life" did 62 Million OW but was only tracking for 40-45 Million.  Early tracking for BB4 has 51-55 Million.

They started the marketing kind of late but it seems awareness is high.

It's looking good on Qurom. That could be good for  walkups even if the presales are not lighting the world on fire.

Guys the earlier audience reviews are coming in and it's a "Crowd Pleaser, Hilarious, Actioned Packed, One of the best in the series".  Are quotes that are out there.  Also the young Directors are getting props for stepping it up after "Bad Boys For Life".   Again people enjoy watching Will and Martin together.   Can't wait to see the film.   Still trying to decide if I want to do IMAX or Dolby.

It's fine, if you like the third one this is more of that. Novelty of a new Bad Boys is probably not as strong but I felt a stronger visual energy from the duo directors this time.

World of reel already started doom&gloom thing, referencing Deadline's "30 mln start" concern

That Deadline report is such a load of horseshit. Deadline Anthony should never be used as a good source of anything. And of course people like Jeff Sneider and Jordan Ruimy on World Of Reel run with it because they feel like there is blood in the water and that's what they do.

I'd argue even a $50M opening would be a big win for this. This lacks the novelty factor of the last movie, is 4 years after that, and is being released in arguably one of the most toxic and volatile environments the industry has ever seen. If this one can at least reach that number this weekend, then I can't imagine Sony being too upset, especially since it carries a very similar price tag to the last one.

It's relatively cheap, a 50 mil opening is well on the way to profitability.

Been saying that. For this movie with the budget even a 40+ would be fine as long as WOM is good and with summer weekdays and no real competition in the weeks to follow. But for the overall marketplace and to avoid the meltdown that will happen on the weekend thread a 50+ even 60+ would be great.
