Another strong performance by DBZ. I'm not sure why it didn't get a proper release, it's easily having the highest PTA in the top 10. Proper release in 2500-3000 theaters, it could make 40-50M.

Nope they tried that already with Dragonball Evolution. It bombed and only made 4.8m OW and 9.3m DOM. It's a small number of dedicated fans that inflates the PTA, but the movie has little appeal outside of them.

I agree with you, but at the same time Dragonball Evolution pissed off even the fans. So it appealed to absolutely no one. (I'm still amazed that Fox was able to get it to even $48M OS - how are they able to get such disproportionate OS grosses from domestic flops?)

Not a good comparison. Evolution fucking sucks and its run shows that while DBZ: RoF was very good and had strong run from day 1.

The quality doesn't matter. Something like this isn't going to appeal to many people outside of the dedicated fans. Pushing a wide release would just be wasting money.

Well YTD comparisons it's well above 2014, 2011, and 2010. But just above both 2012 and 2013 but those were on a Sunday and a Monday which is earlier in the week this is the middle of the week. Also I think that this August maybe the least attended August since 2000. Back when Hollow Man led the month and that was dropping like a rock.

As Damien beat me to the punch it's not about quality, Dragonball only appeals to a small segment of the population. Putting it in a huge amount of theaters would waste money. It's better to have a few theaters satisfy all the demand then having many theaters not having enough demand to satisfy. It's one of those films that always does well in a limited release because it has a dedicated fanbase, but the fanbase is small.

For previews, I'll guess $5-6m for Compton and $1.1-1.4m for U.N.C.L.E.

I'll throw in some predictions too :P

Thursday: Compton - $6.6M

Uncle - $1.3M

Friday: Compton - $19.7M

Uncle - $6.2M

Weekend: Compton - $54.1M

Uncle - $17.1M

Actually, 2012 was the least attended August of this century, not 2000.

but in terms of how this August is heading towards. Yes 2012 was the worst of this decade, but I didn't know this century wow. I guess whenever you have the Olympics and a dead release schedule yeah it's not going to be pretty. Edited by Maxmoser3
