Accursed Arachnid!™
I attribute a lot of this to the "Must See" rush right out factor with a lot of these Blockbusters.. People rush out to see it right away and most of the time, are content seeing the movie, 1, maybe 2 or 3 times, depending on how good it is.. Couple that with Home Entertainment and how a lot of people simply wait for the Blu-Ray with all the Bells and whistles in favor of seeing the movie over and over at the theatre which, if you have a family of 4, that's a $100.00 every time you go to the movies and that adds up.. You know, most people see films once. Total. This need to see films multiple times only hit those who either casually geek out on films or totally geek out on them, like us. Admittedly, movie geekdom has grown while the percentage of more casual filmgoers who wait for films to come to video or cable has grown as well. But a majority of moviegoers still only see films one time. So when you think about how amazing legs were back in the day, that wasn't from repeat viewings as much as word of mouth and theaters being the only way to see a film. There are just too many avenues to get entertainment these days and too many ways to see a film after its theatrical run plus most casual moviegoers have too much on their plate to fit a movie in. Those are the main reasons attendance figures are down.

cookie
A few movies were super successful but nobody wanted to see much else. There was no middle ground between the $300m+ hits and the $170m+ fare (MI5, PP2 and Ant-Man). The über-succesful blockbusters sucked the air out of most other tentpoles while the mid-range films only did decent albeit better than last yeat. TalismanRing
Well now my 1.5M 3 day prediction looks stupid I think mine was 3.5m so not much better. I'm sorry I doubted you Bob! It's also based on a great book that's rather popular so it looks like it's fans came out. It's a shame that Redford couldn't get financing for this before Newman became ill. That is a shame cause I know they were always looking for something to do again together - great pair!! I do like Nick Nolte though - curious to see how they play off each other.
