First of all, I know Skyfall is facing backlash right now but I could be wrong and in the end the backlash will die down and it will be remembered as the best film. But here's the rub: I won't know if I'm right or wrong until about 20 years have passed. Just like you can't say "it'll be remembered as the Dark  Knight Rises of Craig's films" because not enough time has passed for the Dark Knight films to make such a statement. This is about the long game. I liked Skyfall way better than Spectre but I'm taking my personal feelings aside because the whole point of said prediction isn't how people are responding to the film now but in the future.

I understand that, but it falls into way too many dated traps of blockbusters these days that it won't be remembered over Skyfall or Casino Royale. I just honestly don't see it working like that. Skyfall's backlash seems to be dying out now anyway after SPECTRE's release since it's ridiculously better than it while SPECTRE won't shut up about Skyfall as a movie's existence

Well I guess we'll know in 20 years, won't we? :)

The key long term for Star Wars is making movies that are not in the time period and not related to the main story line.  If they keep he quality high and tell stories from other times and not involving the Skywalker family the universe is so expansive they will be fine.  But so far all of the spinoffs they have announced haven't branched off that much (although Rogue One sounds awesome) which concerns me a bit.  They will have to branch off to keep the money train rolling more than the next 10 years.

I agree.  In time, spin offs trading off nostalgia won't do.

but they've got a few they can do like that before that time comes.  If they're smart though, they start trail blazing that path sooner...than later...so it can ride off the enthusiasm as opposed to changing direction when the other has already lost steam.  It'll be interesting to see, either way.

I crack up whenever I hear "Skyfall backlash".  Its not a Gravity or Avatar.

I think films that don't hold up to multiple viewings do suffer from at least a slight "backlash". Skyfall is more of an experience that doesn't lend itself to "popping in on a lazy Sunday". Casino Royale is a film that can be watched over and over. Hence why it is now rated higher on IMDb. QoS is much worse on the re-watchable scale. I'm hoping that even if Spectre is not as good as Skyfall it's easier to watch than QoS.

Skyfall having any kind of backlash is news to me. Perhaps I just wasn't savvy to any reception to the film beyond the confines of Filmgasm, KJ, and my real life experience, but it seemed to be pretty widely beloved in 2012-2013. It's also - as I can confirm from a re-watch of all of the Craig Bond films this week - still a damn great action movie that holds up upon my seventh viewing.

I guess I understand negative reactions to Spectre even if I don't agree with them. It's a clear step down from Skyfall, but I would personally rate it on par with the most recent Mission: Impossible film. Each one succeeds in being a solid - if somewhat overlong and overplotted - action film.

Quantum is easier to rewatch due to the short runtime IMHO. Skyfall is the best of the bunch overall. Never liked the cheesiness of Casino Royale's third act, but up until that point it's great.

Any example of movies that were consider much better after twenty years?

Using franchise films, ESB was considered the best of the OT and it's still considered the best.

Ditto for any franchise favorite.

I'll agree that Casino Royale suffers to some extent from third act sluggishness, but I still love it as a whole. While it could have benefited from being ten minutes shorter (if not slightly more, and all from that third act), it's still a great reboot that started the Craig Era in just about the best possible fashion. Seeing the Bond franchise go from the (admittedly kind-of entertaining and perversely enjoyable) silliness of the Brosnan films to the grounded nature of Casino Royale is still astounding.

Go Peanuts! I'm sad that my little one isn't close to ready for the theatrical experience yet because I've always loved the Peanuts characters/specials (plus the film looks like the cutest thing ever made) and it would've made for the perfect first movie.

I'll root for a great Pixar film in three-or-more years, just for you and junior. ;)

STAR WARS had a better critical reception than EMPIRE, initially. Movies like FIGHT CLUB, THE THING, and HEAVEN'S GATE are considered in a far better light than when first released.

You really need an example?

The original Psycho is a good example. The reception was mixed when it first came out and yet now it's considered a classic horror film. Another example? The Shining which had a murky reception when it first came out. Alien was considered a weak science fiction film entry when it was first released. Film history is filled with examples of classic movies that had a murky reception, films that people hailed to be instant classics that have been forgotten in time, and films where the reaction hasn't changed over time.
