Purely hypothetical right now, but the idea of a STAR WARS 8 versus AVATAR 2 showdown in December 2017 has me irrationally excited...

yeah, yeah, that I belief, more to nag about (he is not an SW7 fan...)

Just got pointed out via the German BO website:

dom: Avatar plus $100m+ = SW7 of today (don't kill me, only a deliverer of tweets and such, I am an Avatar fan too)

Scott Mendelson is out of his mind if he thinks Avatar 2 is going anywhere near that December 17th release date.

Avatar may be an international smash hit, but it was a novelty in the United States.  It made an insane amount of money, but that was based off the new introduction of 3D into cinemas, and since then 3D has gone down in popularity in the United States.

It will not have a repeat of the success it enjoyed in 2009, not even close in the domestic market.

I don't think he understands what bi-annual means.

Twice a year, on Christmas? Doesn't make any sense.

Does it really matter.  She's doing the best she can.  Cut her some slack.  She taught herself how to speak English.

I wasn't quoting terrestrial Baumer, I was quoting Scott Mendelson :D

edit: I was quoting Scott Mendelson who was being quoted by terrestrial. There, that is the correct answer :P

For the most part I stay out of this Avatar/SW stuff but let me just say this about Avatar.

Yes, the 3D helped a lot, no doubt.  But that's just enough to get people to check it out.  Getting a 10 multiplier means people liked it... A LOT.  I don't think it will come close to making what it did both here and internationally.  But that only has to do with it hitting the zeitgeist before.  Record setting films have nowhere to go but down.  But to say it was a novelty really discredits how liked it really was.  And as I said you don't get a 10XX if you are just a novlety.

Novelty may be a bit harsh, but I don't think it is something the vast majority of people actually care about after the fact.  It was a visual and effects driven film that was very pretty to look at.  I guess the words I need would be empty phenomenon (Domestic) or something along those lines.

Gun to their head, every 20th Century Fox executive would tell you they don't want to go within 100 miles of Star Wars in the domestic market.  International market is a much different story.

It will be interesting to see what they do.  The biggest mistake 20th Century Fox and Cameron made was procrastinating.  The second they heard Lucasfilm was bought by Disney they should have fast tracked development of Avatar 2, but my guess is they still thought they were fine since Episode VII was supposed to be May of 2015.  I think it completely caught them off guard when it got bumped to December of 2015 and then it had to be devastating to see that $248m opening and international record as well happening in their December territory.

They tried to re-stake out that December territory, but it doesn't matter at this point.  Star Wars is too big and now that they have found they can have these kinds of records in December and keep it clear of their other Marvel product in May/Summer, they aren't going to give December back.

Avatar needs to find a new home, and there aren't really a ton of options as sweet as December was for them.

Thank you  (even of in this case not needed, as me wasn't meant)

Btw, I more or less started - after a long break in/of trying - with two English written technical handbooks, one about a ~ construction/CAD software (AutoCad ~early '80, still w/o math-calculation-generator), the next was for repairing my German-British-mix van.

And then tons of VHS/DVDs in English with subtitles... and than I tried Alfred Lord Tennyson (me Babylon 5 fan = idiot to try it that at that time),... as a 'better' literature beginner, in 1995 or so. Not a good idea...

I did take 45 minutes English per week in the '70 for a time, but my teacher told me I'm his worst pupil in his entire career.

I was good in math, physic, history, art... but English = :circles:

Well, from what I understand, the reason Avatar is being delayed now is because like A New Hope, Avatar is working on special effects that have never been done before...they are making up new stuff.  And because Cameron is a perfectionist, this stuff takes time.

This info is very outdated.  Almost every studio has a flat licensing percentage over the entire movie run that will slightly change.  The days of 80% on opening weekend and 25% on Week 10 are long gone.

One article was from 2013. The other was from 2014. So perhaps it doesn't apply to Star Wars. But it would have applied to Avatar.

The Revenant ... is on the verge of passing the $100 million domestic milestone, as the film has grossed a stronger than expected $98.84 million after twelve days of wide release (and an additional two weeks of platform release). ... impressive 25 percent ahead of the $79.25 million twelve-day take of 2010's Shutter Island. With not much expected from this coming weekend's three new wide releases, The Revenant looks to be in good shape to lead the box office over the weekend.

Quote

The Force Awakens continues to pad its total as the highest grossing film of all-time domestically with $861.33 million through 33 days of release. That places the film 69 percent ahead of the $509.06 million 33-day take of 2009's Avatar and 45 percent ahead of the $595.63 million 33-day gross of last year's Jurassic World.

Quote

Ride Along 2 ...was down 60 percent from Monday. In comparison, 2014's Ride Along fell 70 percent on its first Tuesday to gross $2.10 million. Ride Along 2 = $43.28 million in five days. That is towards the lower end of pre-release expectations and places the film 15 percent behind the $50.73 million five-day start of Ride Along.

Quote

13 Hours..... was down just 39 percent from Monday. 13 Hours has grossed $21.06 million in five days of release. While that is a bit below expectations, the film may be able to hold up well going forward thanks in part to strong word of mouth. 13 Hours is currently running 26 percent behind the $28.42 million five-day start of 2012's Act of Valor.

TFA takes Avatar's DOM record

TFA's sequel takes Avatar's sequel release date.

No wonder Jimmy did not make a funny poster for TFA passing Avatar.

I think we will see a similar drop from TFA to EP as we say from TA to UoA. Except TA to AoU was 620mil to 450, so TFA to EP8 might look more like 900mil to 700 something.....

For the love of David Hasselhoff...it's actually happening!?! Paramount has set BAYWATCH for 5/19/17.

After the disappointing grosses of the latest reboot, Paramount's TERMINATOR 2 has been reset from 5/19/17 to UNSET.

Novelty may be a bit harsh, but I don't think it is something the vast majority of people actually care about after the fact.  It was a visual and effects driven film that was very pretty to look at.  I guess the words I need would be empty phenomenon (Domestic) or something along those lines.

Theatrical Performance
Domestic Box Office $760,507,625 Details
International Box Office $2,023,411,357
Worldwide Box Office $2,783,918,982
Home Market Performance
Domestic DVD Sales $231,130,785 Details
Domestic Blu-ray Sales $160,013,717 Details
Total Domestic Video Sales $391,144,502

19+ million copies sold after the fact.  I think Avatar was pretty well liked.
