MinaTakla
Am not sure if we should compare Pets to IO's OS run or if the Croods is a better comp. Looking at the Croods, its OS run was amazing but I see Pets below it in some of its big markets. Yet many people seem to agree that Pets can be heading to 500m OS. So am wondering where that increase over the Croods will come from. France, Germany, Latin America and Europe maybe? Because China gave it already 65m and am not sure if Pets can exceed that. So am questioning whether we are overestimating Pets OS or I may be missing nuances from IO's run that can apply to Pets.. Mojoguy
I still don't understand how the Croods made so much overseas, did people just love all the mother in law jokes in it? Edited July 20, 2016 by Mojoguy
Planodisney
Surely it's going to go more like IO. To me, a Croods type run would be a huge disappointment with how heavily this has been marketed and how well the marketing targets the overseas appartment/pet culture. To me 550 + is on the table. MinaTakla
But then wouldn't 500m OS be close to Dory which is projected to end between 500-550m OS? Dory is surely going to make more than Pets OS, being a sequel. So I see the difference between Dory and Pets larger than just 50m. Even Ice Age is projected in the 500m OS area or less. So can Pets match 2 of the year's biggest sequels? If we look at ZOO for example, OS-C is 450m+. So am questioning whether our expectations are too high or maybe it will outperform Zoo.. With Fory freefalling, its only direct competition will come from IA5 (an anticipated fail) and, much later, from Pete's Dragon (Planes #s?). Sub-335M is a reasonable bet only if it falls 55%+ next weekend. After minions there were no blockbusters last year. This year we have Suicide Squad which will be humongous. I think it will do around Minions legs from now on.

Planodisney
Yah I've been saying 550 OS for Pets just based on gut feeling and success in NA. However, when you actually look at the numbers, and compare it to IO, which made exactly 500 OS, it really doesn't look likely that Pets will reach 500. I don't see where Pets could make up ground against places it will fall under IO to get to 500. It's best shot is if it breaks out in China. Pets will be way under IO just from UK, Venezuela, Italy, Mexico and South Korea. It could easily be under IO by 60 million just in those markets. It will most likely make up some of that on certain markets it does really well in but it's hard to see it making up much because IO was so solid in pretty much all markets. It got to 500 and only got 15 from China, so it had a strong run everywhere. I think Pets UK run will be very indicative of its run throughout Europe. Really solid but not breakout big. For example it will make about 42 million in the UK compared to IO's 60. IO grossed 25 million in Venezuela and through no fault of its own Pets will make 2-3 million. That's an almost 40 million deficit just with those 2 markets. Edited July 20, 2016 by Planodisney
MinaTakla
Maybe close to 400 or 450 could be a better target? I think countries in Latin America, China, Europe and parts of Asia will have a solid run. In the UK, it will become the highest or second highest original non Disney/Pixar film ever in local currency. The Croods made 26m pounds and the Lego Movie made 34m and was based on an exisiting property. Pets will be close to that (though with the ER it will be less in USD) so that's a breakout for non Pixar films. But I find it hard to pinpoint an exact projection for it right now. Those who say 500m OS are still valid to me thinking that its performance in its 9 markets was very solid to could reflect on the remaining 57 ones. And those who say less than 450-500m also seem valid to me knowing that the ER isn't so good. Edited July 21, 2016 by MinaTakla
MinaTakla
Interesting stat I just realized: Of all the animated films that passed 300m domestic, none of them grossed less than 475m OS. So if Pets crosses 300m in the US and grosses less than 475m OS, it will be the first time ever for an animated film.
