DOFP did well, like most X-Men movies, because it had the original cast.  Audiences don't  care nearly as much about the cast of First Class.

FOX fucked up the same way Paramount did with Trek, IMO. Uninteresting marketing that presented the movie as one more chapter with no real novelty aspect on it.
