Oh, Star Trek Beyond. Only at $139 million total. :(

What with your superhero civil wars, your pixar vs. illumination fan fights, your JESUS CHRIST IT'S JASON BOURNE memes.....couldn't STB just been a big hit like ST09 and STID? :(

The competition during #2 and #3 weekends hurt. Also, it's been tough for movies that were not in the 300+ range, and that's where Trek 09 and STID fell. STB may well, depending on Bourne, wind up the #1 movie that didn't make 300M this summer in the domestic market.

But, it deserved better than the domestic cume it is going to get.

Shout out to DORY's invisible but very real legs:

At 482 DOM, it's multiplier will be 3.57x.

PETS will need to do 372.4 to get that same multiplier.

PETS might get there but in the end they will have very similar multipliers, but DORY had an amazing run early on while PETS legs are well spread out.

So PETS is getting the acclaim about being leggy while I fell that DORY seems to be wrongly going into our memory as 'great OW, ok legs' while it's multiplier will be very close to PETS (possibly even higher).

Didn't realize it grossed that much. Knocking at $500m's door. Too bad it won't get there.

Animation is the new CBM.  At least for this year it is. What a year for them except for Ice Age. And even that will make 3 times the budget WW. For a 5th movie that's still good.

It's a record year for both comic book movies and animated features. There are 3 examples of each that have made $300m+ dom this year.

Comic Book movies:
Cap 3

Deadpool

BvS

Animated Feature:

Finding Dory

Zootopia
The Secret Life of Pets

However, I believe that the current generation of comic book movies might be seeing a slight tapering in popularity, with less potential for an Avengers-style breakout. There's a bigger chance for any given animated feature to surprise. After all, they are the only mega blockbusters that aren't based on previously published material.

Disney makes the best animation films! Period! End of story.

Umm.......just because Disney makes the best ones.....doesn't necessarily mean that other Non-Disney companies like BlueSky, Dreamworks, Illumination, etc......can't make good/great films either. :sadno:

Those animation companies makes great animated films as well. :P

There was a bit of that years ago when Pixar was king wasn't it? Prior to Disney buying them.

Yeah, DORY is actually on ~477 after a 1.4m weekend but with Labor Day and dollar bumps it should get to 482.

(A clean 40m above SHREK 2)

Yeah animations have been great this year.

Top 6 Animations combined could beat the 6 CBMs combined:

DORY > CW by ~75M

ZOOTP > BVS by ~12M

SLOP > DP by ~5M (If SLOP has DORY like legs after the 6th weekend it will get to 364, 1M above DP. It should beat DM2's 368M at least)

So Animation has a lead of ~92M.

Now SS will do say, 300M. APOC at 155M. Giving DS 180M (like some MCU originals ANT-MAN, THOR 1, CA1).

So those 3 will do 300 + 155 + 180 = 635M combined.

Removing Animation's lead of 92M, it's 635-92 = 523M remaining for MOANA + KFP 3 + SING (assuming KFP 3 and SING round off top-6 animations of the year)

to get for the Animations to beat the CBMs.

KFP 3 did 143M, so MOANA + SING need 523-143 = 380M.

Seems realistic for MOANA to do ~230 and SING ~150 for ~380 combined.
