A 200 million + OW would be industry shifting. When it's happened the industry pivots to follow it. With Avengers it was cinematic universes, with Jurassic World it was reboots, Star Wars it was legasequels. If Deadpool hit it it changes the approach to R rated films for the next decade.

Well actually, you'd need someone like Deadpool & Wolverine to do that at first place.

I would say Deadpool & Wolverine itself is a result of industry shifting movie which showed the money in different universe crossovers - Spiderman NWH.

If NWH was considered nostalgia bait, then so should this.

NWH is a curious case of nostalgia bait combined with wish fulfillment (multiple Spideys team up).

In the case of DP3, the nostalgia for Wolverine is clearly there, but I think it's more the wish fulfillment/fans have been pushing this for literally 15 years.

So it's a combination of clear nostalgia for '00s movie era Wolverine + pent up demand for this particular team up.  How much one thinks its factor A versus factor B along with how much each are feeding each other is probably up to the person looking at all of this.
