2017 Critics/Alternate Awards Discussion

Recommended Posts

I will say, a month ago I would have called you a nutty fanboy if you predicted Stewart for Supporting Actor, but with the BFCA nom and noms from other critics societies that announce full nom slates, and Logan making the NBR list....maybe. I still don't think it happens, but rounding around to plausible.

Watch him kick Stuhlbarg out on nomination morning (because the Supporting Actor category seems to hate double nominees that much) lol.

If they refused to go the double-nomination route to the point where Ben Foster was snubbed for his work in Hell or High Water, I don't think they'll ever be doing a double-nomination again. Granted, last year was competitive, but Foster was at least better than Hedges and Patel.

Detroit Film Critics Head Manager: The Lego Batman Movie didn't get an Annie nomination. We need to help it gain traction in the precursors.

Detroit Critic #1: I agree. Coco will get there anyway.

Detroit Critic #2: Everyone knows how valuable Disney is in the animation category of the Academy awards. Coco will be there for sure no matter what we do.

Detroit Critic #3: ...Wait, isn't Coco the better film?

Detroit Film Critics Head Manager: No one asked for your opinion, Gerald. This is a matter of a good film losing out to mediocre ones on Oscar-nomination morning.

Detroit Critic #3: *shrugs* Whatever.

These six plus Three Billboards and Shape of Water feel like the easy Best Picture field. I think it's as likely we get seven films as we get nine.

The only other movies I can see possibly entering for a ninth nominee is one of the Focus films (Darkest Hour, Phantom Thread). I'm not completely sold on either yet so who knows.
