Shockingly, there is one 1920s film on my list.

Watch others! There's more good stuff where that came from!

(This really applies to everyone who has no problem placing stuff like Casablanca and 12 Angry Men up top but the rest of their list is like cinema didn't exist before 1972)

I've watched a lot of it (especially recently), and it's tough for it to stand up in today viewing, just b/c so much has changed.  The one's that seem to stand up best are the dramas, the musicals, and the romantic movies...the one's that relied on a lot of horror, comedy, or effects (especially that last one), just start to suffer...

And it's worse as you're younger - I know my kids were laughing watching Frankenstein 1931 and Dracula 1931 (yes, I'm a good mom making them watch the classics of where the current day "monster" visions come from)...and I agree with them in part that the scares and effects just aren't as big now as they would have been to audiences then... so you can appreciate them, but lauding them on a top 100 just isn't likely:)...

I counted 6 that are pre-1972. I have seen quite a handful of films in that time period. I've still got quite a few years ahead of me to watch a lot of those films. It's not like I'm completely stuck in the mind frame of only watching stuff that came out after Star Wars.

Hmmmm, that's a tough one to guess...is it Nosferatu?

No, but good guess. That's a pretty great film. The one on my list is a comedy.

Ooohhh, haven't seen too many comedies of that era at all, so you'd probably stump me.  I'd guess something with Charlie Chaplin, like The Circus, but have no confidence in my answer:)...

Not to simplify things too much but I'd say with a lot of stuff if it was done basically right it still works. In terms of comedy, among the '30s and '40s screwballs there are some of the funniest movies ever made. The strengths of Keaton, Chaplin and Lloyd are still on full display. Sherlock Jr. is both a better comedy and a better action movie than 99% of movies that were made in both genres over the next century. You have a point about horror/effects but something that relies more on atmosphere like Vampyr or I Walked with a Zombie remains pretty spooky.

Yes the lack of sound and/or color and the stylized dialogue and acting can and unfortunately will be stumbling blocks but the right thing to do is try and adjust to it, not turn away (that's not directed at you, ofc, just me rambling again), and keep digging if you like the big classics. But of course I'm saying this as the kind of freak who would obsess over The Maltese Falcon at age 7 without even any explicit encouragement from his own mom.

I'm currently at 12 pre-1972 movies (and Casablanca isn't one of them), up from 3 on my previous list.

Just looking at a preliminary list I have at least 35 from 1930-1969 that I’m considering

By the way, I am mostly agreeing with your sentiment in my own list - I had 16 films from 1969 or before on my list...which is more than I had from 2010 onward:)...

can i just say.. maybe this is unrelated but... my mum has the worst taste in film, it's real bad.

I remember me telling my Dad there was a sequel to blade runner coming out... she said "not that film, it's dire".. I couldn't believe it. It's ok though... she watch anything with spaceships in. She won't watch Titanic because she knows the ending is sad.. she didn't even go and see Avatar when it was in cinema. sorry I had to get that off my chest

Hey just wait until I slot movies produced by Harvey Weinstein or star Kevin Spacey or Mel Gibson

Way ahead of you there Dar. 😊

In fact, I'm willing to bet 75% of the lists will have at least one Harvey film on the list.

Challenge accepted.

edit: dammit, challenge failed. But only because he held the rights at one point, not that he had anything to do with making them.

Yeah but they are still listed as executive producers on all three films.

* = I haven't sat down to watch the film in its entirety, but I know for sure that, from what I've seen, the film deserves to be on my list.

** = I haven't see the film yet, but I am definitely going to be watching it before the deadline, mainly because of the film class I am currently in at college. I own the DVD for Ghost in the Shell, and I plan to watch it as soon as I get the chance.

I know how I want to order my list: via a playoff-style tourney using 100 pieces of paper in a bucket. And I'm gonna personally make sure I have the best list possible from there. Wish me luck!
