WB didn't attach an Aqumam trailer to Barbie, by far their biggest movie of the year, so they already failed to give this the widest possible promotion. Instead the spot was given to Wonka.

They don't know at the time that Barbie Will be huge break out, considering early bo prediction only around 55-65.

Maybe they still considering the date too. Who knows.

Reportedly they've decided to keep it. They also can't do any additional reshoots to fix it, so they're kind of stuck with what they've got either way so a delay wouldn't add too much, especially since the strike will likely be over by December

If this is as bad as rumors suggest, that's even more reason to keep it where it's at. It's got one of the few dates where it can still do gangbusters even if it's terrible. Christmas is the only time left when people go to the movies just to go to the movies (or get away from their relatives for an afternoon) and this is the only big action blockbuster scheduled.

Both big blockbusters for sure, but probably enough difference in audience between a CBM and a musical that they won't cannibalize each other that much. It's the quietest December in years. Why push Aquaman 2 to March and risk it doing The Flash numbers when you can leave it here knowing it will easily do twice what that film did even if audiences don't like it?

All I know is they better keep Heard as far away from the marketing in this movie as possible. It already seems doomed, if the Heard hate riles up in force it could really be a disaster.

That portion of the population has proven to actually have no influence on anything.

That’s not always true unfortunately. That said, this movie doesn’t need any more hurdles than it already has (and no this is absolutely not an invitation from me to want to discuss opinions of Heard or Depp for the record).

I agree, but wasn’t the first Aquaman audience actually composed of more women than men? How does that affect that split, I wonder?

This, ANd the whole Depp/Heard fuss is yesterday;s news anyway.

Now the reports it has not done well with preview audiences is more concerning. Waners does not need another WW84 on it's hands: a medicore to poor followup to a much liked film.

And I would have concerns with opening this so close to Wonka anyway. I can't see how they will not hurt each other.

It’s getting Thor Love And Thunder vibes with it’s teaser less than 3 months before release

And they’re not moving, every big outlet already said the one movie WB isn’t moving is this one

It’s just very shitty marketing indeed, which is weird considering it’s a sequel to such a big movie. Yeah test screenings are awful but Meg 2 is also getting tepid audience scores and still doing somewhat acceptable numbers

I don't get opening this so close to Wonka when there is no need to do that. There is a reason studios usually space big releases a couple of weeks apart at a minimum.

recently rewatched Aquaman and you really forget how much the original film was a big, globetrotting fantasy-adventure. It's weirdly so comic book-y that it feels distinct from your generic CBM.

It was a real breath of fresh air after how dour and grim the previous DCEU movies were.

Not sure about quietest December in years. Last year the only releases were Puss 2 and Avatar 2, and there was pretty much nothing else. There was 0 depth in the marketplace.

This year there are stronger holdovers and Aquaman 2, Color Purple, Wonka, Migration, and a lot of other movies.

Real problem is that WB has so many big films opening so close together. I think it is impossible they will not cannabalize one another. Competing against yourself is never a good idea.

That's true for number of releases, but usually December has a big kahuna that eats up most of the attention (Avatar 2, NWH, a Star Wars) but this year doesn't. Excluding 2020 for COVID reasons, you have to go back to when Aquaman came out to find another December without one and even then Aquaman had more direct competition in the form of Bumblebee and Into the Spiderverse that December. Maybe quietest was the wrong word to use, but Aquaman 2 has a sweetheart spot on the schedule currently. The movies most likely to play to similar demos (Dune 2, The Marvels, and maybe HG) won't be a big factor by December 20th.
