US WEEKEND THREAD: Record 70.25 OW (highest grossing OW for an original horror)

Recommended Posts

Why do folks think THG had great legs?

2.675x after a 152.5 ow is good for a non-sequel considering it was YA but not great. Some other non-sequels that opened similar or much bigger outside Nov/Dec:

BATB 2.9x with 174+ ow

TA 3x 200+ ow

JW1 3.1x+ with 200+ ow

BP 3.5x with 200+ ow

even sequels with similar ow outside Nov/Dec making it past THG's legs,

TDKR 2.78x after 161 ow

JW2 2.8x+ after 148 ow

TDK 3.4x with 158+ ow

I2's an animation so leaving it out

sequels with similar/bigger ow outside Nov/Dec that made it close to THG's legs,

CM 2.6x+ at 400 dom after 153+ ow

AIW 2.63x after 258 ow

GOTG2 2.66x after 146.5 ow

The record OW for an original film is SLoP's 104m, followed by Inside Out's 90m.

For live action, it's either The Passion of the Christ (83m) or Avatar (77m), followed by The Day After Tomorrow (68m).

Us is in really good territory.

THG had great late legs. Dropped fast in first 17 days but the 3rd week multi is really strong, as is 4th week multi, 5th week multi, etc.

Deadline saying 28.6

Quote

FRIDAY PM: Refresh for chart Us’ Friday continues to swell, now at $28.6Mversus the $27M-$28M which was being spotted earlier. This puts Us at a swing of $67M over three days. Saturday will determine, how low or high the pic plays with some estimating a -15% ease from today’s grosses which include last night’s awesome $7.4M previews, and even a 3-day well north of $67M.

Does Us fall even more on Saturday? We’re not being nasty, but as we said all along, it’s a different type of social horror pic from Get Outand audiences are polarized by the ending evident in Us’ B CinemaScore tonight and an overall 3 1/2 stars and 78% on PostTrak. While Bs are common, and even great for horror movies B.O. prospects on CinemaScore, these type of exits could indicate a greater decline tomorrow. Also understand, Get Out set the bar really high, so everyone is heading into Us with enormous expectations. Females under 25 (who are now fourth best demo showing up at 18%) gave the pic its highest definite recommend of 70% and positive score at 81%, in addition to African Americans who embraced the pic with a 67% definite recommend and an 80% positive score.
