If you are excluding Guardian Of The Galaxy or Man Of Steel, you are basically just doing that because of the source material, because the contents of the films are definitely Sci-Fi. Sci-Fi and and superhero are not mutually exclusive categories any more than horror and mystery or action and comedy.

But almost every Superhero film has a scif-fi element, even Birds of Prey has a sci-fi element. the only ones that don't are The Dark Knight Trilogy, The Punisher (I think) and Kick-Ass (that I can think of). I just think it should be all (with Sci-fi elements) or nothing, but there will most likely be ALOT of Superhero films on this list if they are.

Outside being they flirt a lot on the genre if not fully embracing it, Dark Knight for example exploring what people thinking of themselves as good will be tempted to do with the will come soon global spying on citizen capability.

Dark knight rises is the exploration of the socialist revolution (lot of sci-fi are what if social/political change).

Punisher and Kick-Ass are 2 good one.

Well that really doesn't make any kind of sense. Now movies are science-fiction when they touch on modern mass surveillance or a "socialist revolution" (whether that is what TDKR was about or not), because those are things that actual science fiction works could also be about?

Dark Knight extend the capacity and explore a little bit how different would use it (and if the audience, i.e. the population would agree with it).

But it does not take that much place in the movie (versus how much place a movie like Her give to the Sci-fi) or necessarily go that interesting on it.

Seem to be clearly a what if the french socialist revolution set in modern day Gotham no ?

no ?

Not really interested in debating the true meaning of TDKR because this is way off-topic. On topic, science-fiction stories can be interpreted as allegories for any or all contemporary issues. That doesn't mean that everything is science-fiction or "flirting" with science-fiction. No need to nitpick everything all the time, especially in this case where there isn't some Academy jury that will decide officially what is science-fiction or not; just need to know the rules for this top 100 ranking. Hopefully nobody will argue that TDKR should be included in a list of science-fiction movies.

I feel like the 'One Movie per Franchise' rule seems like a good compromise for this situation, in terms of stopping the list from being dominated by Superhero movies/Star Wars, while also not shutting them out entirely.

The poll has been up for more than 24 hours. So I’ll close it now. As Zeesoh pointed out below, it was 13 vs 10 for no vs yes to Superhero movies. 8 vs 15 for Star Wars movies. So only Star Wars movies will be allowed on lists. And don’t feel obligated to include Star Wars movies in your list even if they would make your top 100.

Cool.

There are some more intellectual definitions worthy of some merit, but at a basic level I associate Sci-fi with aliens, outer space/other planets , A.I., and and time travel. At a first pass, the only MCU movies I’m likely to consider are Gotg1&2, and Avengers 3&4.

I’m actually really looking forward to the results since I love good time travel movies but it can be difficult to gauge beforehand whether a time travel movie will have logically functional time travel va being a total incoherent mess. At least without totally spoiling yourself.

Predestination will be high on my list :)

Hard to go wrong if you adapt Heinlein (well, unless you screw up the core of the story, which thankfully they did not)

Ok.  So.  I guess that means Top 3 right now can be

1. Alien

2. Captain America: The Winter Soldier

3. Captain America: The First Avenger

8+5>10 :P So No SH movie won the poll. I do think SH should not be included

(but SW should) but its your call in the end.
