Considering streaming companies don’t release streaming data, you wouldn’t have evidence whether it did or did not explode on streaming.

Last of Us Showrunner Craig Mazin Worked on Both Dune Scripts

 

“When he’s not on ‘The Last of Us,’ Mazin has been working intermittently on both ‘Dune’ movies and circling a new ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ installment, but only if he can work with Ted Elliot, who co-wrote the first of the franchise and two subsequent films.”

 

Heard about this a while back. He apparently did more work on the Part 2 script than Part 1. Some sources are even saying he’s getting a writing credit on Part 2. This interview doesn’t explicitly say that, however.

His credit will likely be the “Additional Literary Material” credit that the WGA created not too long ago.

I could also see them giving him a writing credit to bolster the scripts chances at an Oscar nomination.

WGA keeps on trying to solve the problem of which writers should get credit for a movie and which, though they  worked on the script, should not, and they never seem to solve the problem. And it has been going on forever.

Most notorious example of the WGA getting it wrong was the 1959 Ben Hur, where the writer who did the first draft of the screenplay was awarded the sole credit, though the script was so extensivley rewritten by others that little survived of the first draft.

This became very common knowledge in Hollywood, and was the reason that the only Oscar it was nominated for it did not win..11 wins in all...was best screenplay. ALl the voters knew the guy given on screen credit contributed almost nothing to what was on the screen. Charleton Heston sort of rubbed it in when ,in his thank you speech for Best Actor, he said 'Thank You, Christopher Fry" a eminent English playwright, who, although he got no credit, pretty much wrote the second half of the film.

Dune’s release date would have been 41 days from now, and they would need actor promo in the weeks leading up to it. It’s nice that the writers’ strike may be almost over, but we still have no idea how long it will take to settle the actors’ strike and if it would conclude early enough for Dune’s marketing blitz.

This should actually move up to February given how weak that month currently looks. At the moment the most high-profile release is Madame Web (a Sony/Marvel joint ala Morbius), which can probably be scared away easily if something bigger opens within close proximity. Plus, would free up a March that's still incredibly packed at the moment and would still allow the actors plenty of time to promote their other projects (Timmy and Wonka, Zendaya and Challengers, Austin and The Bikeriders, etc).

Yeah the issue was actors promo not writers. Actors are still on strike and haven’t even come to the table since July. I don’t think they should have delayed it cuz they had a good imax deal but it is what it is.

I strongly suspect the delay was about more than the inability of actors to promote the movie. I tend to think the strikes prevented Villeneuve from doing re-shoots and pickups he needed to realize his vision. It was well known he developed ideas for new scenes when editing Part 1, so I’d be surprised if the same didn’t happen here.

 

If I’m right, this also explains why we haven’t heard about any rumors about screenings, either.
