The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread (December 2021 - July 2023)

Recommended Posts

Uncharted, counted today at 10am EST for Thursday (9 days to go):

NY (AMC Fresh Meadows 7): 160 (6 showtimes)
Miami (AMC Sunset Place 24): 89 (4 showtimes)
Grand Rapids (AMC Grand Rapids 18): 24 (2 showtimes)
Austin (AMC Lakeline 9): 10 (2 showtimes)
Tempe/Phoenix (AMC Centerpoint 11): 35 (3 showtimes)
San Francisco (AMC Metreon 16):
142 (6 showtimes)
LA (AMC Universal): 198 (6 showtimes)

Total tickets sold in 7 theaters: 658.

Up 45% since last Wednesday.
Comps (both for Thursday): Dune had on Monday of its release week 1.858 sold tickets (6 days left for Uncharted to come closer)

and TSS had with 7 days to go 1.041 sold tickets.

Sonic's final sales number was 1.120 which Uncharted should reach.

As mentioned before the Dune comp makes almost every film look bad because that movie was fan-driven and the IMAX shows were very crowded. Especially in the AMCs Metreon and Universal and exactly here Uncharted is not doing too well which surprises me.
The jump till today was not big (but also not bad). Maybe people wait for the reviews or this is a film with good jumps in its last week like Jungle Cruise.

It will have a similar number as TSS (4.1M from previews) in 3 days (7 days left for both films then) and has no HBO Max competition so 4M+ from previews would be my guess too at the moment.

Uncharted, counted today at 10am EST for Friday (10 days to go):

NY (AMC Fresh Meadows 7): 127 (8 showtimes)
Miami (AMC Sunset Place 24): 78 (6 showtimes)
Grand Rapids (AMC Grand Rapids 18): 29 (2 showtimes)
Austin (AMC Lakeline 9): 2 (2 showtimes)
Tempe/Phoenix (AMC Centerpoint 11): 14 (3 showtimes)
San Francisco (AMC Metreon 16):
95 (10 showtimes)
LA (AMC Universal): 63 (6 showtimes)

Total tickets sold in 7 theaters: 408.
Up 48% since last Wednesday.

Comps: Dune had again on Monday of its release week 2.621 sold tickets (unreachable now),

TSS 714 with 7 days to go (= Uncharted has 3 days to come closer, I doubt that it will reach it but could overtake it next week)

and Sonic's final number was 2.103.

Same as above: Not exactly the jump I hoped for. But a lot can change over the next 9/10 days.

Marry Me had today 128 sold tickets for Thursday and 144 sold tickets for Friday.
Partly fitting comps: Last Night in Soho had on Tuesday for Friday 157 sold tickets
and WSS had 407 sold tickets, also on Tuesday for Friday.

OTOH Respect had on Wednesday of its release week 97 sold tickets.
I would say the presales are ok so far and a romantic comedy with a happy end just before Valentine's should do better from walk-ups than Last Night in Soho or WSS.

I did not check all theaters but Blacklight improved till today. Still thinking an sub-5M OW is likely but let's see.

Near sellouts in almost everywhere I looked. This is breaking out for sure. Definitely on the upper end of tracking or beyond.

Edit: ticket prices are way higher for 3/1 imax shows. Lincoln sq is $30 and even in bay area its at $25.

Road Show prices return....... It'a bout three time the average Ticket price..which was what Gone With the Wind, the classic Road SHow picture...charged on it's intial road show run ...around a dollar a ticket at a time when the averge movie ticket was around 30 cents. Of course the classic road show involved more then just inflated ticket prices.

The Batman Tuesday Showings(6 hours)

Denver: 659 tickets sold in 4 theaters

Megaplex: 1274 tickets sold in 4 theaters

Denver has surpassed Black Widow's first 7 hours, which was 598 tickets sold. Megaplex is already close to Black Widow's T-22's 1519 tickets sold, which was like 5 days of sales.

Hmm, maybe it can do half of NWH 24HR’s…

And these tickets are 30 dollars. The demand for this film is high, higher than I initially thought.
Tempted to update my 160 million OW prediction to 175-180. Might even reach 200.

The cinemas he's counting aren't $30. The only one that's $30 is Lincoln Square IMAX in NYC, which is usually $25-27 as it is. Idk what his are exactly, but the ones at my theater (for instance) are $24 and others in the city are as low as $19 for IMAX.

AMC Century City, Burbank, Universal and Metreon also say hi to the 30$ tickets. Universal and Metreon are probably 2 of the biggest auditoriums in IMAX.

There's a cap here though. It can't increase much more today unfortunately.

Will be interesting to track Thursday sales for sure.

Depends on how much this can be spoilered.

If there's something very big that pretty much nobody knows (which from what i read, there is), maybe they will try to avoid an Eternals situation.

Those are actually all located inside the Lincoln Square IMAX. It's that big.

The NTTD comp is one we should take with a grain of salt, only because it's on a different league compared to this film. And...yeah, this seems about on par with expectations, despite just two comparisons. It probably indicates an opening in the double digits unless it really gets hammered by Sunday. I guess that's better than a lot of other movies of its ilk over the past couple months.

I mean...I don't have anything interesting here to say. It's pretty low in raw sales and I don't really see it going super high. So...on to the next one.

I'd be lying if I said this wasn't a good day today, especially as we are pretty close towards release, but these types of bumps/flukes happen and I feel confident this is just an outlier. The next few days will really confirm how this movie ends up by the end.

@MrPink asked me to update him on this in the Telegram chat, so...here you go buddy. And honestly, I think this movie's probably gonna struggle. I'm getting serious NTTD/Matrix 4 vibes with how little momentum there is here.
