BO Germany/Austria: Dune first 2024 blockbuster (3mil admissions)

Recommended Posts

In Austria, Guglhupfgeschwader is MUCH stronger (already >70k admissions, so more than doubling Germany's per-capita numbers) while Bullet Train is pretty head-to-head with Germany (the usual 10-15% lead); most holdovers however were stronger than those 15% in Austria once more. (It HAS been pretty rainy here ...) - so, overall, in Austria a pretty perfect summer weekend! Maverick has now passed 500k admissions and while still a far-out bet, seeing its drops there's still a (very) slight chance at 600k - incredible!

Overall good (for a summer weekend), with one strong and one weak wide opener and fine holds across the chart!

Guglhupfgeschwader is showing that the franchise has still growing potential in its 8th installment, opening 14% higher than nr.7 (which was a franchise high, too, like every one of them). Bullet Train stood no chance with only half the PTA of its competitor - maybe it can recover some ground with little competition in the next weeks. Top Gun Maverick has now crossed 3mil total - a "Goldene Leinwand", congratulations! Jurassic World 3 and Thor 4 movie have crossed 2 resp. 1,5mil admissions, not spectacular numbers but good.

In Austria, the lead of the Bavarian crime comedy was even bigger, it dominated the market.

Next weekend: Nope and domestic family movie Der junge Häuptling Winnetou are the bigger openers, but are not expected enter the Top3, which should stay the same as this week.

This year Germany market performence really bad with only 2 film crossing 3m admits,Frnace already got five film cross 3m mark.

Hope Avatar 2 will save the market with 9-10m admits(think Avatar 2 will doing around 12m admits in France)

I would say more something like 9M-11M in France and around 7M-8M in Germany

Why prediction is like 1M in Germany &2M France? In China, Avatar re-release managed $57.7M, even after years of piracy in 4K-UHD.

Why so much negative buzz? Because of Lunacy or just people believe that we are still in pandemic and not ready for JC film.

I would say atleast 10M in Germany &12M in France.. (。ŏ﹏ŏ)

France has a completely different culture, where cinema is acknowledged as art and industry (same as bédé) while in Germany and Austria, cinema is still partly seen as low-brow entertainment, mainly for children and illiterates ... really, nobody gives a damn here if a movie theater is closing or how you could support the industry. France has at least 50% more admissions/head over the year, and a MUCH bigger share of domestic productions.

That being said, it's true that even considering these conditions, Germany is underperforming this year - as mentioned a few times, Austria (which is usually just 10-15% ahead/capita) has been leading by rather something like 30% for a few months now. Given the similarity of the two markets, that's quite a difference and it's really a good question if there are any deeper reasons behind this decline.

I have blind faith in JC and I'm sure Avatar 2 will be awesome no doubt about it it's just that when Avatar came out in 2009 there was a huge hype (first movie with 3D, crazy special effects.. .), today I have the impression that the hype is much less strong and above all much less strong than great marvels like the last spiderman or the last avengers (obviously even if I like marvels I would like that A2's hype is even bigger like it was then but that's the way it is).

So I don't see it reaching the peaks of admissions of the first films but slightly less (I've seen people who talked about a 50% drop but it's way too much you have to respect JC the film and the WOM will surely be great ).

Anyway 9-11M admissions in France or 7M-8M in Germany is not nothing, it is certainly less than the first one but it remains HUGE (only 4 films have exceeded 10M admissions in France since 2009 !)

A typical summer weekend, only two releases >100k admissions - at least Minions 2 crossed the 3mil treshold, not bad at all after the lukewarm OW. Guglhupfgeschwader is doing fine, 25% ahead of ist predecessor in this domestic crime comedy "franchise", it should sail past 1mil total without any problems and has a good chance to reach an all-time high for the series (hitherto Leberkäsjunkie with 1,24mil total). Top Gun Maverick managed one more fine hold. Let's not talk about the openers …

In Austria, Guglhupf already has passed 100k after weekend two; Minions are now >400k and Maverick even >500k, just wow at those legs, it's already at a multiplier of nearly 9!

Next weekend: Where the Crawdads Sing should become the biggest opener but at the rate presales are dropping in, it will have a hard time entering the Top3 … with open air shows now in full swing everywhere, we might see some older releases reappear in the charts.

Wow, okay. Nope played more like Massive Talent with huge walkup boost for the previews. I was to conservative with my expectation. Nonetheless not a good opening weekend for Nope.

With this being the first WE in (what seems to be) ages having bad weather in most parts of Germany again, I really hope there'll be some good business. Would be great if in the end Minions could be much closer to 4M than 3M 👀

Can TGM come close to 3.5m?
