(The table above includes the new year's day) How incredible ironic that after a year of bomb after bomb, the very last weekend was when the local movies truly overperformed. Mamonas Assassinas had the best launch for a brazilian movie in 4 years (That of course, excluding the new year's day and pre-sales of Minha Irmãe Eu, otherwise that one takes the feat). Aquaman 2 will soon become the best selling DC movie released in 2023 while Wonka will soon pass 2 million admissions, amazing results for both. The rankings and statistics for the whole 2023 is out but I will wait until next week to report, it is better to wait for the final results. Next weekend is the full release of Migration and Priscilla, also Wish and Dogman. Usually the week after the new year see increases for the top 5 again, not sure if it will repeat this year though with the release of two big animations.

I can tell january will have a lot to prove itself, without a big hit like NWH and WotW there will be the need of multiple movies doing well. Wish seens to be off to a very healthy start and the locals are having good holds, so I hope the box office can start building off to that. Slightly down from the first weekend of last year though, when it sold 1.8M tickets mainly driven by Avatar 2 and Puss in Boots 2. For the second weekend straight Aquaman increased and remained on top. It will soon pass The Flash's R$52M and Quantumania's R$56M, and maybe Across the Spiderverse's R$66M. The performance in the brazilian territory really is amazing, we will have to watch if it can pass Black Adam's R$79M though. Minha Irmã e Eu is now the best selling brazilian movie since the pandemic and should become the first brazilian movie in 5 years to reach 1 million admissions. Ironically (or not) the last movie to do it was Minha Mãe é uma Peça 3 with the same director, Suzana Garcia. Mamonas Assassinas also reached a milestone and it is the 3rd best selling since the pandemic. A much needed win for brazilian movies. Wish and Migration releasing the same weekend was not a good strategy and the canibalized each other. Even so, Wish had a very slightly better opening than Elemental and 3 times the opening of Strange World. Both should see good legs. Next weekend releases Mean Girls, Beekeper, The Holdovers and Chama a Bebel.
ThatWaluigiDude
By the end of 2023, Brazil have reached a number of 833 working theaters (vs 805 in 2022) and 3500 working screens (vs 3366 in 2022). This means we are close to the pre-pandemic levels (2019 counted 852 theaters and 3507 screens).
