Brazil Box Office Thread

Recommended Posts

I expect The Batman to finish between $117-126m. Joker's legs would put it over $131m, though.

I haven't checked this thread in a while and I don't know if you care for attendance numbers or if it has been discussed, but here's some data I find interesting.

Attendance of live action DC movies in Brazil at the end of their 3rd week (since 2011):

Spoiler

Joker (2019) - 7.093.180

Batman v Superman (2016) - 6.915.499

Justice League (2017) - 6.811.796

Suicide Squad (2016) - 6.346.037

Aquaman (2018) - 5.584.309

Wonder Woman (2017) - 5.173.303

The Batman (2022) - 4.759.255

The Dark Knight Rises (2012) - 4.104.933

Shazam (2019) - 2.764.862

Man Of Steel (2013) - 2.618.883

Birds of Prey (2020) - 1.773.890

Green Lantern (2011) - 1.251.811

Source: Ancine

I can't find weekly data for 2021, but in case anyone is interested, The Suicide Squad's total attendance was 1.314.774 tickets, and Wonder Woman 1984 was 2.155.246.

Also I went to look for No Way Home numbers to see how it compares to other huge movies (these are totals):

Spoiler

Spider-man: Homecoming (2017) - 6.686.736

Spider-man: Far From Home (2019) - 6.555.353

Spider-man: No Way Home (2021) - 15.571.318

Avengers: Endgame (2019) - 19.656.467

The Lion King (2019) - 16.242.804

and I think it suggests that attendance even for the big events have not really recovered. No Way Home despite exploding from the previous Spider-man movies I think could have had similar numbers to Endgame, and definitely beat The Lion King, so in normal times The Batman should have also been performing closer to Joker/BVS/JL.

We are seeying an interesting trend since the year began, where blockbusters seen to be in higher demand on the weekends than on the mid-week. The big budget movies are having higher multipliers when the weekend comes but on monday they sort of step aside for the low budget movies, the local movies and animation. For movies like The Batman this kinda hurted a little bit. Like, if you take Scream for example, it had a higher thursday and yet, Uncharted did almost double on the weekend. Then you have the Oscar movies like Belfast and local comedies like To Ryca 2 pulling better monday drops than The Batman.

One very good news is that the price of the brazilian real in the past 3 weeks have been going up like a rocket and right now is on the best value in 2 years. If this keeps up, it will help a lot for the brazilian BO to go back in being competitive.

This means if Sonic 2 and FB3 improve over the last one it could also reflect on the dollar earnings.

Box office 31 march - 03 April

Movie Box Office (R$)             Total (R$)    Admissions total (Est)
1 Morbius 9.023.000 9.023.000 445.120
2 The Batman 4,107.000 108.804.000 5.560.000
3 The Bad Guys 1.624.000 8.136.000 439.960
4 Ambulance 538.000 2.420.000 127.700
5 Ooops! 2 - The Adventure Continues 345.000 404.000 20.070
6

Alemão 2

345.000 345.000 16.370
7 Uncharted 197.000 26.930.000 1.460.000
8 Coda 153.000 687.000 33.440
9 The Worst Person in the World 114.000 282.000 12.160
10 Drive My Car 83.000 509.000 25.140

LC: $1 = R$4.61

Morbius finished above the estimates and The Batman bellow, but both Batman and Bad Guys holded really well to Morbius. Coda's re-release did almost the half it's R$318k opening in september. Overall, the top 10 grew 22% from last week and stopped the constant drop in revenue.

Next week is time for Sonic 2 and Desperate Hour.

Deadline is reporting an opening of $3.4M (R$16M+) for Sonic 2. If true, that would be above the 1st movie's $2.7M (R$11.5M) and would beat Assassin's Creed as the best opening of a videogame adaptation in Brazil.

The Batman is at $22.1M (~R$111M-R$112M). It took a punch from Sonic and it might not reach R$120M.

Really happy for Sonic, but at the same time sad that it hurted The Batman. Hoping that it cross that 120M mark, but I guess it's at least passing FFH..?

We can hope. My wish is that it can keep enough screenings in the FB3 weekend to at least take some advantage from the upcoming holidays.

For sure, two weekend holidays in a row will definitely help it. At this point I just want it to pass FFH (117.4M) which would be a really good achievement

I added a little "change" on the table, dunno why I didn't do that before.

So good news, The Batman finished above predictions and actually holded pretty well, but more surprising, so did Morbius. Sonic 2 had the best opening of a videogame movie and 2nt best of the year, the first Sonic did really well during weekdays so it will be fun to see it's run. We have some big days ahead, we will have holidays on friday, sunday and next week on thursday, it might be good for holdovers. This weekend will release Fantastic Beasts 3 and Medida Provisória (Executive Order). That last one actually sold out it's pre-screenings last week, too bad it will most likely be eaten by FB3.
