chasmmi
40th Lagaan (India) 7 Votes: 163 Points 2020 Position: 26th Yep, they got cricket sort of down...ish. Best Cricket film of all time. Ok, this is gonna be a quick drive by 5 entries here (and the country list should now be fixed too). Lagaan is a great film that is more evidence in my theory that India can make sportscentric films about as well as anybody. Pretty strong drop compared to the previous outing. But the Hindi films have been bouncing around everywhere compared to the last list, so I just can't predict anything from this. The real list we all care about: 15 - Japan 11 - India 10 - France 4 - South Korea 3 - Italy 3 - Sweden 2 - Germany 2 - Hong Kong 2 - Mexico 2 - Russia (includes USSR) 1 - Poland 1 - China 1 - Denmark 1 - Norway

Ah I forget that SRK was as young as the characters he plays once. I have not seen this one, but I have faith that a film led by SRK is going to have some decent quality to it. It is also nice to see London, but that is a me thing. India gets separation from France again (Who knew a film called Tokyo Story could be from Japan eh?) The real list we all care about: 15 - Japan 12 - India 10 - France 4 - South Korea 3 - Italy 3 - Sweden 2 - Germany 2 - Hong Kong 2 - Mexico 2 - Russia (includes USSR) 1 - Poland 1 - China 1 - Denmark 1 - Norway

This was the first Miyazaki film I watched that I actually thought was a classic. Spirited Away is good, Mononoke is very good. Wind Rises is fine. Howl is terrible, and he has another that is even worse. However, this film is top tier animation. People should really check this one out. And the Ghibli wave continues as another film enters the top 100. At least this time, I wholeheartedly agree with the sentiment. I should get around to watching this some day. But then it also has a sequel, so that means like 6-7 hours I need to put aside, and I don't have that kind of time. Otherwise how would I be able to do important stuff like Platinum Hades. (Note to all. DO NOT DO THIS! IT IS HELL) India is now back to being as close to Japan as it is to France (Is that true Geographically too? I feel like it could be pretty close. maybe its a tad closer to Japan) The real list we all care about: 16 - Japan 13 - India 10 - France 4 - South Korea 3 - Italy 3 - Sweden 2 - Germany 2 - Hong Kong 2 - Mexico 2 - Russia (includes USSR) 1 - Poland 1 - China 1 - Denmark 1 - Norway
chasmmi
36th Diabolique (Actually France) 7 Votes: 165 Points 2020 Position: 38th Looks like Sweeney Todd: Business Lunch So is this kind of like French Hitchcock? Let's be clear, I say this as a person who has yet to find a Hitchcock film they like. But the curiosity was there. And if anything, this film allowed me to complete the multi-entry arching, hilarious joke that is cleverly self-deprecating in regard to my Tokyo Story mix up. Maybe I should also give Russia a bonus point? Either way, France keeps India in its sights and hits 11 films for real this time. The real list we all care about: 16 - Japan 13 - India 11 - France 4 - South Korea 3 - Italy 3 - Sweden 2 - Germany 2 - Hong Kong 2 - Mexico 2 - Russia (includes USSR) 1 - Poland 1 - China 1 - Denmark 1 - Norway

chasmmi
35th Ikiru (Japan) 6 Votes: 167 Points 2020 Position: 134th The thrilling story of an empty room. Feels like Kurosawa hasn't turned up in a while. The film of a Japanese man rocking a pretty darn cool hat. Perhaps the best hat in Japanese cinema? I can't really give much more insight than that, but to be honest, what more do you need other than a hat. Japan is pretty much running away with this now, so it's more a case of every Japanese film revealed is one non-Indian/French film revealed. Seems like the shoe is on the other foot here. I remember growing up wondering how there can be a famous film about a shoe. This film is classic enough that I have at least heard of. I think it is about the Navy and stuff going slightly awry. But alas, it is impossible fore me to ever find out. And with that, Germany is now only 14 films off the lead! It all changes here . There is a big building and it is raided. It seems like pure lowest common denominator violence, but very well done common denominator violence. There is a lot of fighting and punching and kicking and maybe some tweaking and twirking. Who knows? Stays flat from last time around and adds to the small pool of one nation wonders. No idea what it is about, although black and white kurosawa makes me assume it is an angry samurai on a quest to prove something. (The big green samurai poster is also a clue on that front. I assumed this did better last time out, but it turns out that this is a pretty big raise from last time out. The only thing worse than this is the impending dread that the one anime that is even worse, is likely still to come. I wanted to like this film. It had a cool premise, good voice acting, and a good art style. Sadly, it has an abhorrent final third that ruins everything and I can only assume that most viewers went and took a shower or something while that was all happening. Japan now approaches 20 films on the list. Is 25 or even 30 on the table right now? Daxtreme
The real tragedy here is Hong Kong at 2 and South Korea at 4, both have been so influential (Hong Kong more in the 80's and 90's, South Korea more in the 2000's and above)... Having been gone for a few days, I feel like I need to go hard with this take on Rashomon and give the hottest of hot takes that will put all of the internet ablaze! Well that was some fun silliness. The concluding four hours of a near 6, 7? 8 hour epic, this biggest India film that was going to change your perceptions on Indian cinema forever until RRR comes along to change your perceptions on Indian cinema forever in preparation for whatever comes out in a year or two that will to change your perceptions on Indian cinema forever. Surely too little too late for India as it hit 14, but that gap to France is now probably the main concern going into these last 25 or so reveals. The first film that I have both seen and liked since number 38! This is a good film. It is what Korea does well, take a concept that people expect they know what they are getting and then give them something different. Was a shame that Peninsula just turned out to be aggressively fine, but this was a solid film that put eyes on Korean cinema (although clearly not enough) and that is always a good thing. That brings Korea up to 5 and probably ensures its spot as 4th in this list. Perhaps a little disappointing that double digits looks so far away.
