JimmyB
Seems obvious WB has no idea what to do with this movie or how to market it and are dumping it. They didnt even give it an MLK spot like prior January dumps Green Hornet or Dolittle.

Napoleon
There's still a chance this ends up being well received by audiences and performs fine at the box office, despite WB not having confindence in it. It's not like studio executives always know what they're doing.
lorddemaxus
He’s not a household name, be easily top 5 most passionate fanbase for a director rn. Could see this make not awful numbers just because of that even with shit marketing.
Alexander
Well, it more depends if they can sell it like it's a serious space spectacle. Then maybe AD Astra numbers.

And releasing it at the beginning of the year means people will likely forget about it for the big awards too. It's a signal that they don't know what to do. I don't really agree that January isn't good for box office. Early winter months can actually be quite hospitable for movies if you put effort into promotion, it's just typically if you do have awards interest you have every reason to open it somewhere in December. Honestly, if they aren't really that confident in awards contention then it is actually a pretty solid release date to get it away from more prestige-leaning blockbusters. 1

It's not like studio executives always know what they're doing. It happened before even with Bong. Snowpiercer had highly reported horrible test screenings, the awful Harvey Weinstein tried to mess it up because of it, recut it completely, tested again (also awful). Then they dump the Bong cut in theaters. The movie ended up receiving great reviews, it did okayish on box office and even a TV show was made out of it. The January date for this probably tell a lot more about WB than anything else, which is probably why chaotic reportings continues to be made about it.
Blaze Heatnix
It's nice that the director has the final say in the cut of the movie, BUT that doesn't mean the studio has to be happy with whatever this movie is. There's a difference. This movie is expensive, the director isn't known for making blockbuster movies, Pattinson isn't a name that sells tickets ( unless he's part of a IP like Batman ). So yeah, the January date makes sense. The studio doesn't want to spend that much. By the way, why is it called Mickey 17? Hopefully people won't come expecting a Mickey movie. Please bring that F CinemaScore. XD

I don't really care about the financial prospects of the film at this point but nice to see that Bong got final cut, I will be there for it (even if I greatly prefer his Korean works over his English language ones) day one.

Rumour is that an ongoing internal fight is happening over the Final Cut that will be released @ViewerAnon, do you know something about this? Nothing solid but I looked back at the history of test screenings and they seem to line up with what Bong Joon-ho said about finishing his director's cut in November. There was only one test screening after that which would line up with testing his final cut to see how it would score.

I presumed there’s no really a reason for Bong to lie after the news exploded, so i’m very happy that at least we’ll see his vision for the movie, even if it’s allegedly not testing like a typical blockbuster and being dumped by the studio because of this. They did a weird PVOD/dual release experiment with the film. https://variety.com/2014/film/box-office/snowpiercer-hits-3-8-million-on-vod-as-weinstein-co-shakes-up-distribution-1201270667/ Quote The studio’s Radius-TWC label unveiled “Snowpiercer” on-demand, with Bong Joon-ho’s film still in theaters. The picture has racked up an impressive $3.8 million over its first two weeks on VOD, while pulling in a respectable $3.9 million over five weeks of in theaters. It’s expected to become the company’s highest-grossing VOD release. Honestly, the pre-pandemic window experiments really deserve their own retrospective writeup. Legs ended up being more of a problem for the film than the opening. If it made 60/70M off of the 19M opening (like Moneyball, Woman King, Looper and Deepwater Horizon) it might not have turned a profit but it would have at least doubled its production budget.
