The UAE opened this weekend with $1.9M for Barbie’s 5th best score of the session. The result is 71% above Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, 41% over Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 and higher than Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania by 34%.

 

Saudi Arabia had a strong opening at at No. 1 with $1.8M, ahead of Indy 5 by 262%, Guardians 3 by 161%, Quantumania by 117%, Avatar: The Way of Water by 37% and Jurassic World Dominion by 33%.

 

Japan’s opening was $1.4M on 650 screens with scores from Eiga and Filmarks at 3.5 and 3.8 out of 5, respectively. Results are roughly on par with Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again and Sex and the City.

Barbie doing so well in middle east is quite a shock and certainly interesting.

Also, the entirety of the Middle East is not Taliban run Afghanistan. Increasingly, many cities and regions are becoming more vibrant and diverse with expats from all across the world. It's not the most liberal place on the planet, but things are slowly changing.

Out of the recent global phenomenons, Japan has only embraced TGM and Mario. NWH, Avatar 2, and now Barbie were all disappointments in Japan compared to other markets (with Barbie being closer to bomb territory).

Excluding the new markets where it opened this weekend, this would imply roughly 42% drop this weekend. I'd say that's quite decent considering how much weather impacts boxoffice in Europe. Hoping it can stabilize from here onwards

The expat population (aside from the people who basically work as slaves) is decreasing though as a lotta ME countries are trying to give more high paying jobs to citizens. Doesn't matter tbh. Barbie doesn't really have anything that would offend any movie-going Arab (who are usually upper class btw).

Also i have noticed from social Networks the movie in Dubai is only with original language and subtitled in arabic.

So i wouldn't be surprised if a big part of the audience are just tourists, especially in this moment of the year.

This was filmed at the Barbie launch in Saudi Arabia. Women talking about how they either played a lot with Barbie in their childhoods and it’s very nostalgic, or if they didn’t (had an alternative doll called Fulla), it was still great to see all these other women dressed in pink and feeling like they’re part of the same event.
