Fourth of July/Despicable Me 4 Weekend Thread | 122.61M 5-Day Opening

MaXXXine is likely wildly frontloaded but that it should end making more than X and Pearl combined is definitely an accomplishment. Even the B CinemaScore is good for that type of movie (being a niche project where everyone going in knows exactly what they're getting).

Possum Trot going from a $3.5M opening day to a $1M second day reeks of Angel Studios math at work heh.

Wasn’t Minons 2 also very backloaded (wasn’t here for that one)? Seems to be a trend with the franchise.

Minions 2 has a massive OD due to TikTok but it kinda fell off over the weekend. Legs kicked in high gear after Thor 4.

They not only had Wednesday previews (that went on most of the day) they also had screenings a couple weeks ago that were very well-attended. But yeah, Sound of Freedom this ain't, even with that A+ Cinemascore (wild how much less exciting that grade becomes when it's scored by a preaching-to-the-choir non-event).

Wait a second. Maxxxine is the third film in a trilogy? I have zero recollection of the first two films if so. Or are people making up that fact?

I think X got a little bit more publicity too because Jenna Ortega was in it as well.

I would argue Inside out 2 blowing up likely saved DM4 from flopping by bringing people back to theaters.

That's one big giant mask assumption that in my opinion is wrong. Despicable me universe has been pretty consistent with every single movie.

It's an excellent jump but the movie, shot in LA, cost north of 20M so that should be considered too.

Ortega was not yet a household name yet when X was released (Scream '22 did well but the brand was what carried it to success, while Wednesday didn't premiere until near the end of that year). Its release was a blip that A24 didn't do much to promote, in part because they were going all in on the much more accessible Everything Everywhere All at Once at the time.

Where’d you see that?

Eh, as others noted, that 3.5m opening day was far from an opening day - in other words, typical studio behavior now - similar to what MaXXX will face with its multiple days of previews factored in.

Nah, many people can´t afford going to the theater with 2-3 kids more than once this quickly and have to choose 1 movie.

DM4 always tracked well and had solid presales even before IO2 opens, but the walkups was weaker than expected for example

Walkups are good, they are just not as insane as Minions 2.

Hmm. Guess walkups for MaXXXine were really anemic. Ah well.

Pretty decent increase from the holiday, should be enough to avoid a 50% drop despite very direct competition? And after this weekend it's pretty clear sailing in terms of direct competition outside of that Harold movie, so from here it should recover nicely...

So is IO2 still on track for 650m DOM?

Probably just barely. Losing some ground on ts4 here but good chance to make it up over next two weekends
