At this point, the only chance Frozen has at $300m is if the average for every week from now on is around $15m, meaning interest needs to remain very high. Maybe $280m is more realistic? Avatar still made $23m after the video release, so Frozen can still get over Spirited Away after it comes out on dvd if it gets that close. Of course we wouldn't have to worry about this nonsense if Disney delays the video release by at least a month or two like any sane company would. The reviewers over at the Frozen bluray page at Amazon Japan are trashing the hell out of Frozen with low ratings (they are already complaining about the high price), which is pissing me off. http://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B00DTLG7MC/http://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B00KFC0GWA/

Of course they're complaining about the high price, it's $45! The second link is over $60!

648,239 admissions the 3 week with more admissions ( no GW ) and only 7,4$ million...

If the gross is higher, the fact that it sold more admissions (by having a lower average ticket price) just makes it even more impressive.

This projection is with 10% average drops which has yet to materialize in the run.
Spirited Away starts comparing to Frozen at week three due to its big midweeks it had during 7weeks of summer. This comparrison is for the long leg battle. SA numbers have been converted to current exchange rate.

With the way Frozen has performed I see it keeping pace with SA and I'm calling it a lock, I just don't see it fading hard with the post GW hold.

Old school! E.T was the last entry into the top 10 for admission pre VCR. It is the number one straight runner upon initial release. Star Wars had expansion help the following summer. One can argue this is the all time #1 movie stateside. Lets see how frozen holds its weekend drops compared to E.T. and if it can catch up. It had 12 weeks summer boost to start and ran for 52 weeks without major a re-expansion

Its holding tighter than either of them. The only real drops were after bumps. only down 15% from week 2. ET down 45% and SA down 61% from weekend two. The weekly average drop is just 2% from week 5 after spring break. It was off to a smaller start but its now gaining on both of them.
As it continues to hold near flat the number are exploding down the road as the summer midweeks and Obon amplify.

What everyone is forgetting is that the DVD release won't cause such an abrupt fall in earnings as it did in NA. With $280M by July 16, I still think there are chances it gets to $315M. Let's hope the dollar falls a bit so that Frozen can at least surpass HP7:P2 worlwide (in dollars), even if it doesn't surpass SA in Japan (in yen).

Of course we wouldn't have to worry about this nonsense if Disney delays the video release by at least a month or two like any sane company would. Of course they're complaining about the high price, it's $45! The second link is over $60!

But the first one is DVD + BluRay + digital copy. And the second one is all three + 3D BluRay. A DVD normally costs at least 3000 yen. So they're actually not expensive for Japan standard, and for those who want all of them. I think people are complaining about how they don't need all formats in one set. They want DVD only, or BluRay only, so they can buy it in much cheaper price.

The multipliers have been working well.Sat over sat, both toho and TMK1 were down 10% thats 2.7mTohox is 57.5 for a discount day. 5.4mTMK1 is 32.75. 5.74meither the thursday number was wrong. I thought it was high. the multiplers were low for mon thru thur or aeon drop a lot of seats for the weekend

Well, one thing we don't know is the distribution of theaters within Japan, other than the fact that Toho tends to be more urban, right?

So, hypothetically, we've got the discount affects everyone day coming in on the first of the month, which also happens to be a Sunday, the biggest movie going day of the week. It hasn't happened in Frozen's run before (and, in fact, won't happen again unless it's still playing next February/March). That's going to play with the demographics of the audience in ways we haven't seen before, and can cause unexpected things. It's possible some of the theaters we don't have information on got less of a benefit than the ones we do, in this situation.

What is the problem with DVD/Bluray-sales hurting the BO?

The english HD pirated Copies are long out in the Internet. The expensive Japanese Blurays wont hurt the busines with families watching Frozen for the first time in cinemas.

The repeat busines in Japan is minimal (the same with Japanese tourists: they only come once to Vienna. Always different people, who want to see Mozart's tomb)

I don't know if there are any other holidays in June, but assuming there aren't, I think we can finally expect that Frozen will start declining at a steady pace from now on (until July 16). Am I right?

You would think so, but this is Frozen. All you have to do is look at the 10th weekend where it had the unexpected +10% increase. There were no holidays or discounts and it even shed a few seats from the previous week, but it somehow increased.

Even with the Sunday discount this weekend  I don't think anyone was expecting anything better than a flat weekend until the pre-sales started trickling in, but we ended up with another increase.

When it comes to Frozen in Japan there really is no precedent, it's just not behaving like any other movie before it, not even the previous mega blockbusters. We are in completely uncharted territory now, and I'm loving every minute of it. :D

Well, if the price is so unaffordably high, in a way, that is good for the box office sales.

I think its the rentals that ultimately kill it. $5 for 3 people vs  $40 at theater plus snacks, 45 to buy bluray
do they hold off on renting/vod in japan?

This Monday Frozen drops 10% from last Monday. But I thought last Monday was a special one-off case due to the Saturday being some kind of sports day? Doesn't this mean that it's holding super strong this Monday? Any reason this is the case, or am I reading this wrong and in need of correction?
