11 (08) ¥19 million ($180,000), -51%, ¥290 million ($2.8 million), 300: Rise of an Empire (Warner Bros.) Week 3

Maleficent took in about 540,000 admissions according to estimates, which will put it below ¥750 million unless its avg. ticket price comes in higher than expected.  Very strong opening, though, and ¥5 billion ($50 million) is doable.  If it passes ¥4.65 billion (Mr. & Mrs. Smith), it'll become Angelina Jolie's most-successful film in Japan, and Japan will likely be Maleficent's best market, too.

Edge of Tomorrow did about 160,000 admissions based on estimates, which should be enough to beat Frozen and debut in 2nd place.  It should also be comfortably above ¥200 million ($2 million) for the weekend unless a lot of old Tom Cruise fans came out to see it, which will drive the avg. ticket price down.  And remember, the film had robust previews last weekend that are unaccounted for.  They'll be included in the total (not the opening weekend).

In the end, it's an underwhelming opening and should have opened higher.  Legs will be fine given the time of year, but ¥1.5 billion ($15 million) is the likely ceiling unless WOM is extremely positive to push it closer to ¥2.0 billion ($20 million).  At least it's very likely to beat Oblivion though.

I don't really know why the latest Grudge held so well.  It wouldn't have added any screens/showtimes, so there must have been some stage greetings over the weekend or something.

Noah showed a lot of promise opening weekend and during its second week of release, but since then it's began to fall off a cliff.  It's still a success, but ¥1.5 billion ($15 million) shouldn't have been an issue after its second week and it's going to end up with ¥1.35 billion ($13.2 million) or so now.

And not included in the estimates happen to be 2 openers.  The latest Anpanman will definitely be in the Top 10 in the morning, and may have down well enough for a #5 spot.  And the newest documentary film about AKB48 doesn't look as strong as the last couple, but it'll still be in the Top 10, too, perhaps in 7th/8th.  Estimates can't be accurately gathered because both films are almost limited releases.

Wow I haven't visited this forum for a looong time. Told you Maleficent would be big. I'm thinking at least $50m total. Very interested in Godzilla's OW in a couple of weeks. I hope it's a success, for the sake of Hollywood movies in Japan.

That's true, but you forget that in Japan, Frozen is not just any movie. It's making $240m+. It's a rare phenomenon. You can't compare that to its performance in other countries. Also, it's not because they love Frozen, but because the Disney/princess hype from Frozen made people there interested in Maleficent. The trailers and promos were attached with Frozen. And when it's attached to something as big as Frozen, it's hard for people not to notice it. So yeah, I think Frozen's huge success really helped Maleficent, especially with its OW.

Long time no see catlover. Glad you are back.

Btw in Indonesia Frozen is definitely more popular than I previously thought after seeing it by myself

Isn't Godzilla a Japanese icon or part of culture? Doesn't that guarantee a big Japan opening (and drop like a rock afterwards as they'll be disappointed, just like in every market lol)? I just hope Maleficent will still go strong despite Godzilla.

The thing to remember is that Japanese audiences loved movies about giant monsters… 50 years ago.

Previews + friday release.

So if I'm understanding things correctly, $4.5 mil for EoT breaks down as follows:

Previews: $1.7 mil

Friday: $0.6

Sat/Sun: $2.2

The previews are almost as great as the actual opening weekend. Very hard to interpret.

Last weekend's preview admissions weren't far off of the opening weekend admissions, so it makes sense.  I was guessing something around $1.2-1.5 million.  And as I said, the previews were very widespread.  Warner Bros. was definitely trying to get the word (WOM) out before it opened everywhere.

That breakdown you posted looks about right, Tau Ceti.  $4.5 million (¥460/470 million yen) is a healthy start and should get it above ¥1.5 billion ($15 million+).  Let's see if WOM is strong enough, and legs solid enough, to push it towards ¥2 billion ($20 million).  I'd consider it reaching ¥2 billion a solid success.  I mean, it's still far below what Tom Cruise use to pull in in the 90s/00s, but it's much higher than his recent titles.  That'd be a 53% increase over Oblivion for example.

Hopefully it does well 50 years later.

I'm just sick of seeing only female-centric Hollywood movies doing well in Japan.

Yeah why can't movies like TASM or HP or Resident Evil do well in Japan

I just read that Japan is preparing for a big typhoon coming this week. Not to be that insensitive but I hope it doesn't affect much Maleficent's run.Edit: also, does the sat-sun drop indicate that Malef might be more frontloaded and therefore less leggy than usual movies? I'm getting worried lol.

Maleficent came in lower than its admissions at Toho Cinemas suggested, what Disney reported, and below estimates...

It still had a strong opening, but that does give it a sense of possibly frontloading.  Wanted was Jolie's last big opener, and it was actually really frontloaded.  Let's just wait and see how the week plays out.  Either way, 4 billion+ ($40 million+) will still be achieved even if it's frontloaded.

Weekend Ranking (07/05-06)

01 (--) Maleficent (Disney) DEBUT

02 (--) Edge of Tomorrow (Warner Bros.) DEBUT

03 (01) Frozen (Disney) Week 17

04 (02) Mission Impossible: Samurai (Shochiku) Week 3

05 (04) Thirst (Gaga) Week 2

06 (--) Anpanman: The Apple Boy and Everyone's Wishes! (Tokyo Theaters, Co.) DEBUT

07 (06) The Grudge: The End of the Beginning (Showgate) Week 2

08 (03) Transcendence (Shochiku/Pony Canyon) Week 2

09 (05) Noah (Paramount) Week 4

10 (--) The Documentary of AKB48: The Time Has Come (Toho Video Division) DEBUT

>Maleficent made her way to her final market and debuted with ¥691,678,400 ($6.8 million) with 500,837 admissions on 643 screens.  The number is below previously reported estimates, but is still very strong nonetheless.  There may be a little frontloading to it seeing as it's Jolie's first film in 3 years and with it being played in front of Frozen for 4 months now.  But with summer just a couple weeks away, legs will still be good enough to reach ¥4 billion ($40 million) if not ¥5 billion ($50 million).

>Edge of Tomorrow actually came in a bit above estimates, taking in ¥259,056,500 ($2.5 million) with 172,211 admissions on 632 screens.  This is a solid start, and with last weekend's previews and Fridays' take included, its total is up to ¥459.6 million ($4.5 million).  ¥2 billion ($20 million) is in play, but don't be surprised if it finishes closer to ¥1.5 billion ($15 million).

>Frozen brings its 17-week total up to ¥24.63 billion ($241.5 million) with 19.35 million admissions.  It has noticeably slowed down adding less than ¥400 million ($3.7 million) for the week, but such a figure in its 17th week is massive (only Spirited Away has a higher 17th week).  It's looking to finish with ¥26 billion ($255 million) as long as the DVD release on July 16th and the July 19th openers don't kill it, but if it's withing striking range of Titanic's ¥26.2 billion total, Disney should and probably will go for it.

>The latest Anpanman, the first since its creator passed away, earned ¥71,494,980 ($700,000) with 59,798 admissions on 152 screens.  I believe this is the second highest opening in the very-long running series.

>The Documentary of AKB48: The Time Has Come definitely came in lower than the last few documentaries with that rank, but no figures have been reported yet.  This one was kinda hyped by including some "infamous" handshaking event (fans pay to shake the hands of the members...), but that clearly had no pull.

And I just realized that Toho (biggest distributor in the market since 2006) doesn't have a film in the Top 10 this week (excluding their Video Division).  It's probably happened before, but I can't recall any weekend where they didn't have at least one, and it's usually multiple, films in the Top 10.

That'll change soon though as they have a lot of big films coming up this month and in August.
