JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

no way that happens.....TLS was culturally relevant to the Japs..hence the numbers...

add to that it's a great movie and it came at a time when tom cruise was one of the popular stars ww...

oblivion is mediocre at best

Also Japan market is not the one which it used to be...  look at Iron Man 3 as an example

Are you trying to say that Hollywood movies are not as big as it used to be in early 2000s? That is true, but IM3 would not be a good example. That movie is actually doing really well. Before The Avengers, superhero movies were not a popular genre at all, except for Spider-Man, and maybe Batman.

Oblivion won't do The Last Samurai's number, or even MI4's obviously, but I'm hoping it will be a solid hit. Tom Cruise is still one of the popular Hollywood actors in Japan I think. And there's no other big releases until, I don't know, Monster's University?

Yep, there's no big releases until Monster's University(except maybe Gatsby and After Earth).......And it will open against Fast 6 and Gintama (a pretty popular anime)....

Weekend Ranking (5/25-26)

1 (1) The Complex (Shochiku) Week 2 [162 theaters]
2 (2) Phone Call to a Bar 2 (Toei) Week 3 [305 theaters]
3 (3) Detective Conan: Private Eye in the Distant Sea (Toho) Week 6 [338 theaters]
4 (6) Shield of Straw (Warner Bros.) Week 5 [323 theaters]
5 (4) Iron Man 3 (Disney) Week 5 [326 theaters]
6 (5) Prefecture Government's Hospitality Division (Toho) Week 3 [292 theaters]
7 (7) Library Wars (Toho) Week 5 [311 theaters]
8 (8) Crayon Shin-chan: Gourmet Survival Class (Toho) Week 6 [250 theaters]
9 (9) Middle-School Student Maruyama (Toei) Week 2 [179 theaters]
10 (-) It's Me, It's Me (J-Storm) DEBUT! [65 theaters]
11 (10) Kamen Rider X Super Sentai X Space Sheriff (Toei) Week 5 [288 theaters]
12 (-) Kiss (Toei) DEBUT! [83 theaters]

The Complex has no problem staying on top and dipped just 9% in it's second weekend.

It's Me, It's Me was the only opener (all limited releases) to debut in the top 10. Over the weekend, it earned ¥44,390,800 ($440,000) with 31,549 admissions on just 65 screens.

Besides the weekend increase for Shield of Straw and strong holds across the board, a very boring weekend. I can understand why studios want their films released in time for Golden Week (late April), but it's leaving mid/late May with dismal numbers.

Some bigger releases are finally on the way this weekend and pretty much every week thereafter until late September.

Some major release date announcements/changes this week:SPEC: Final Chapter - Progress Version - 11/01/2013SPEC: Final Chapter - Crisscross Version - 11/29/2013Detective Conan Vs. Lupin III - December 2013The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug - Moved from 12/14/2013 to March 2014.Thermae Romae 2, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Maleficent - Golden Week 2014 (Late April).Transformers 4 - August 2014The Avengers 2 - Golden Week 2015 (Late April)Pirates of the Caribbean 5 - 07/11/2015The Hobbit is going back to the franchise's original spot (Spring). All of The Lord of the Rings films opened in March.Golden Week was crowded this year with Detective Conan, Iron Man 3, Library Wars and Shield of Straw, but Golden Week 2014 is going to even moreso. And it's weird that Maleficent is being released so early in Japan. It's listed for July everywhere else so far.

I don't buy this for a second. Either somebody in Japan is overstepping their boundaries and the Japanese release is going to get moved back to summer, or Disney's planning to move it up everywhere and we're just hearing it first from Japan.

Weekend Ranking (6/1-2)

1 (-) Oblivion (Toho-Towa) ¥370 million ($3.7 million) DEBUT! [346 theaters]
2 (-) Real (Toho) ¥200 million ($2.0 million) DEBUT! [270 theaters]
3 (-) The Grandmasters (Gaga) ¥110 million ($1.1 million) DEBUT! [284 theaters]
4 (1) The Complex (Shochiku) ¥90 million ($900,000) Week 3
5 (2) Phone Call to a Bar 2 (Toei) ¥70 million ($700,000) Week 4
6 (3) Detective Conan: Private Eye in the Distant Sea (Toho) ¥65 million ($650,000) Week 7
7 (4) Iron Man 3 (Disney) ¥60 million ($600,000) Week 6
8 (-) Way to the Beginning (Shochiku) ¥50 million ($500,000) DEBUT! [104 theaters]
9 (-) Bullet to the Head (Shochiku) ¥45 million ($450,000) DEBUT! [124 theaters]
10 (5) Prefecture Government's Hospitality Division (Toho) ¥40 million ($400,000) Week 3

Finally the Box-Office livens up some. Saturday is a Discount Ticket Day (Toho Cinemas), falling on the first of the month, so expect stronger admissions.

Oblivion is easily outpacing the other films at Toho Cinemas and should see an impressive debut on top. It'll be the first imported-film to rank #1 since Wreck-It Ralph 10 weeks ago.

Real and the Chinese import The Grandmasters will also see solid openings, especially when compared to the past few weeks.

"Oblivion is doing very, very well so far today and looks to be besting Skyfall (which also opened on a Toho Cinemas Discount Day).Perhaps we have a breakout here, or at least, expectations are being exceeded. With it being a discount ticket day, the film will slow down tomorrow, but it may do well enough to earn ¥400/¥500 million ($4/5 million) this weekend. Plus it was a Friday opener, the 3-day total will most likely exceed that number."

Of course, it won't be anywhere near that in gross since it's Saturday was a discount ticket day and Iron Man 3 had a high 3D share. In terms of gross, both films look pretty close the first day:Oblivion ~¥220-230 million ($2.2/2.3 million) / 219,000 admissions.Iron Man 3 - ¥221 million ($2.2 million) / 139,000 admissions. Not too great for Real. The Grandmasters did pretty well and Bullet to the Head did solid business yesterday, too

Weekend Estimates (6-1/2)

1 (-) Oblivion (Toho-Towa) ¥346 million ($3.5 million), 0, DEBUT! [346 theaters]
2 (-) Real (Toho) ¥115 million ($1.2 million), 0, DEBUT! [270 theaters]
3 (1) The Complex (Shochiku) ¥110 million ($1.1 million), -19%, Week 3
4 (3) Detective Conan: Private Eye in the Distant Sea (Toho) ¥88 million ($880,000), -24%, Week 7
5 (2) Phone Call to a Bar 2 (Toei) ¥86 million ($860,000), -26%, Week 4
6 (-) The Grandmasters (Gaga) ¥79 million ($790,000), 0, DEBBUT! [284 theaters]
7 (4) Shield of Straw (Warner Bros.) ¥55 million ($550,000), -30%, Week 6
8 (6) Library Wars (Toho) ¥53 million ($530,000), -16%, Week 6
9 (-) Bullet to the Head (Shochiku) ¥49 million ($490,000), 0, DEBUT! [124 theaters]
10 (7) Prefecture Hospitality Department (Toho) ¥46 million ($460,000), -25%, Week 4
11 (9) Crayon Shin-chan: Gourmet Survival Class (Toho) ¥38 million ($380,000), -13%, Week 7
12 (10) It's Me, It's Me (J-Storm) ¥28 million ($280,000), -34%, Week 2
13 (5) Iron Man 3 (Disney) ¥27 million ($270,000), -63%, Week 6
14 (8) Maruyama, The Middle-School Student (Toei) ¥26 million ($260,000), -42%, Week 3
15 (-) Way to the Beginning (Shochiku) ¥25 million ($250,000), 0, DEBUT! [104 theaters]

Oblivion beat Iron Man 3's opening weekend admissions by 11%, which would put it just above 300,000 [302,000] according to estimates. Normally, 300,000 admissions would result in a gross over ¥400 million ($4 million+), but since Saturday was a discount ticket day it won't be that high.

It's a good opening, and with Friday included the 3-Day is probably around ¥425 million ($4.3 million), that should get the film close to ¥2.5 billion ($25 million).

A bit disappointing for Real and it may drop to #3 depending on how much it made on Saturday.

And great holds across the board, Iron Man 3 aside. I guess it lost it's IMAX screens, but the drop is still quite harsh.

how come back in the 90s or so. Japan used to be the biggest market for a Hollywood blockbuster. Nowadays it is usually not even close

Related with Japan's economy.  If Economy is good, people will got the money and they not just only watch the local film they also got the money to watch foreign film at the same time.  Japan's economy was booming back in the 90s or so.
