You shouldn't compare Titanic with Avatar 2.

Titanic's Customer satisfactory is all time Highest for re-release.

is it just straight-up apathy? or is there an element of dislike in avatar 2's flopping?

Avatar (2009) didn't have anything that could audience other than the prospective of being the "1st 3D Film". Ratings are ordinary not at the level of Titanic (I really hate how people attempt to compare Avatar with Iconic of All-Time - Titanic). Neither had any TV ratings records or Physical copy record.

+ Japan isn't a sequel favouring market (See Frozen (¥25B+) &Frozen II (¥13B+))

Combining the fact that 3D is not longer popular as back in 2010s &not sequel favouring market - Avatar 2 didn't work out.

Now, blame should not come to Suzume's Locking-Up &SLAM DUNK, because Disney have Avatar 2 - widest release ever witnessed in History. But, Audiences didn't really should up.

Fans who love JC watched on PLF & outside PLFs, sales were negligible.

One important fact is that Disney+ is available in Japan, so, much of the casual watchers noted that it will drop on D+ (Avatar 2 is a Disney Release).

Whatever, might be a huge drop from Avatar (2009) but really a big achievement for Disney Japan to break ¥4B, &seem like it will beat Pandemic (previous) biggest release - DS:MOM (¥2.16B) by 2x!

but after the movie came out, shouldnt the positive wom have helped counteract some of that?

Na, na, na.. public interest is important. Fans can keep in recommending. But, GA hate 3D then you can't do anything. If Avatar (2009) had left any marks in past on GA, it seems to be too late for a 13 years sequel affected by changing demography &GA Taste.

I won't say Avatar 2 had Negative WOM, but pretty average/mid liner WOM. Nothing exceptional that can attract crowd like TGM, Titanic &RRR

last question, I promise

any specific reason why japan was the one country in the world where avatar 2 had average wom? I understand not caring about a movie, but that shouldnt make the people who cared enough to watch the movie enjoy it less

Japan plays outlier to like 90% of films. Stop getting so fixated on it lmao. It happened, move on.

Because Japan is unique of its kind.

It's not a country where James Cameron name will be enough to drive box office. You need Content, GA Interest &WOM to make a film run successful like the height of Maverick

SLAM DUNK is currently at $133M as of Feb 19. $100M China + $20M US + $20M ROW, will easily help it to pass Jujutsu Kaisen Movie 0 ($259M) - $273M+

For Suzume's Locking-Up - $103M as of Feb 19. $50M China + $15M US + $30M ROW - $198M. Exchange rate are crazy. Should pass WWY ($206M)

SATURDAY OVERVIEW

Demon Slayer - Flat in admits / + in Gross - crossed ¥3.0B

SLAM DUNK is up by 25% ~¥11.1B Total

Suzume's Locking-Up had a slight increase (5%) ~should be crossing WWY (¥14.23B) in a week or two! I estimate ¥13.95B until SUN

RRR decent bump of 25% - comfortable above ¥1.1B by Sun. Should be defeating The Batman (¥1.19B) soon!

BTS strong hold down by just 10% in admits, but ATP will hold its drop! Same for Blue Giant ~less than 10% Drop!

Ant-Man goes down with 60% Drop!

Since when is Jujutsu Kaisen at 260M? I remember it ending at 220/230M or something a few months ago...

Do you think DS can reach 5B and Suzume's Locking-Up 15B ?
