JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

I wonder what the Japanese grosses for all the WDAS films are... Maybe we can make a pie chart to see how much of that is Frozen lol

Frozen : ¥24.88 billion

Other WDAS movies since 1980 with a gross superior to 1 billion (Lion King, Dinosaur, Little Mermaid etc.) : ¥39.78 billion

That's over 38% for Frozen alone...Maybe close to 40% by the end of its run ?

Let's face it. Disney desperately slated Planes 2 for this summer when they pushed A Good Dinosaur back to 2015, because otherwise How to Train Your Dragon 2 would be the only summer toon. They were hoping to add some competition. They got lucky cuz after four $250M+ 3D animated films in 9 months (MU, DM2, Frozen, LEGO), Americans didn't wanna pay for another 3D animated film. So HtTYD2 failed. I dont think Disney expected anything better than what Planes 2 did anyway.

Numbers should be out in the next 10 hours or so.  BOM will skip this weekend altogether like it has many other times.

And Planes 2 is still probably above Frozen even if it lost to it at Toho and Movix over the 3-day weekend.  Since it should skew really, young, then it too will have played better at Aeon Cinemas.

Aeon Cinemas also has their "Happy Day" promotion that began on July 1st and will end on September 23rd.  This will surely make them the #1 cinema amongst families and children this Summer.  From now until September 23rd - Every Monday, tickets are 40% off for everyone.  Seniors (55+) will get 40% every single day (considering a lot of parents are 55+, this will help families, too).  And the first and last showings of each day will be almost 30% off, too.

They were pretty outspoken about the tax hike that went into effect in April, saying they'd offer more discount days, and here it is.

I mean,Ghibli and animated movies can't split up,they go together. If people like Ghibli it's only thanks to that. I don't understand how they could stop, what else would they do?

The rumor - and so far it is just a rumor, attributed to an anonymous source within the studio - is that with Miyazaki's retirement and the lack of recent big hits by anyone else, the top people have decided to dissolve the company, and are just waiting for the right time to make the announcement.

They might update Maleficent's total since it's about to pass the $700 million milestone. P.S. I just realized that Maleficent will pass Cap2 WW total by next weekend to become the top grossing Disney movie of 2014. Edited by sfran43

Did Disney make a mistake by not offering movie goers in Japan a Frozen freebie if they went to theaters? A cheap Frozen toy could have really boosted Frozen's total in Japan right?

Maybe a discounted offer for the Blu-ray or DVD?  Or a stuffed Olaf!!!

That's good. However, Frozen will stop screening in Aeon on July 31st....it seems that TOHO plan to

 continue Frozen's run....

Yeah, that'll be a major blow to Frozen's box-office.  And probably big enough to keep it below Titanic honestly and will make reaching 20 million admissions more difficult (though it should still reach this milestone).  It's also going to stop playing in Shikoku on July 31st, too

. It still needs over 1 billion yen to overtake Titanic, and looks to have earned 80 million yen or so over this past weekend (2-day).  That's going to be a very difficult feat, especially since Toho and other chains will probably drop it on August 8th.

Although summer vacation is coming, other movies show a decline than last Tuesday; Edge of Tomorrow dropped
more than 50% ....

I am curious. Frozen's 20th weekday is stronger than Spirited Away ...but Spirited Away can stay in the theater for

253 days....why does Aeon stop screening Frozen so quickly? As we can see, Frozen still did much better

than many movies but these movies are still in the Aeon theaters even after July 31st.
