JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

I wonder why TF3 did so well in comparison to the other film.

Anyways still around 20-30 million I think?

Because TF3 opened in the 3D era where 3D shares were 70/80%.  It didn't increase much in admissions.

TF4 won't have this benefit when 3D shares are lucky to be over 20% in Japan nowadays, so it's gross will probably be closer to TF2.

Best comparisons for the new Pokemon film?  Last year's Pokemon film and Doraemon since it skews very young, too.  Children movies in general do worse on average than adult films at Toho Cinemas when we compared the multipliers.

So this tells us that that families/children frequent other cinema chains, like Aeon Cinemas, while teens/adults prefer Toho locations.  It's interesting to note that if this theory continues to hold true, that Maleficent is attracting a lot of teens/adults rather than children or families.

Again, the above totals are NOT first week sales, but overall sales. And Frozen is already that high after 3-days with just Blu-ray sales reported. Posted Image

Frozen is already the ~13th best-selling DVD/Blu-Ray ever after 3-days on the market, and that doesn't include the DVD sales. They'll be lower than the Blu-Ray sales, but its first week on the market might be enough to make it the 2nd best-selling DVD/Blu-Ray ever!

It's also the first Blu-ray release to sell over 1 million copies in the market, and the first DVD/Blu-Ray release sinceSpirited Away to sell over 1 million copies in a week, though Frozen needed 3 days and that's only counting the Blu-ray disc sales..

Since Spirited Away came out on DVD when VHS was still a thing, its lifetime sales including the VHS release is 4.1 million.

So is it mostly just clips from the anime then? That's lame.

If it's anything like the other anime seasons-converted-to-movies I've encountered, it'll be reanimated from scratch with much higher production values than the TV version.  They'll tighten the whole thing up into a single two-hour story arc, probably cutting several minor subplots entirely, and possibly making a few major changes.

Ash Ketchum has gotten annoying, at least in the English dub, but I would imagine some of that stems from the source as well. And it's not a charming annoying like usual, it's a real annoying. It wouldn't surprise me if the new film bucks the trend of surpassing the previous. That said, new games come out this fall: OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire. Oh wait, those are remakes of the games that yielded the weak-performing Advance series movies. Sigh. This is why they should bring back Misty and Brock.

Or let him actually make some progress toward his long term goal, rather than sending him to a new region again, starting with a whole new bunch of pokemon again, meeting new traveling companions again, and being a seemingly inexperienced newbie with no clue about the basics again.

Some release date changes and new dates announced for the fall/winter season:

November:
11/01 - Clover (Toho)
11/15 - As the Gods Will (Toho)
11/22 - Mindset (Toei)
11/22 - Interstellar (Warner Bros.) [Old Date: TBD December 2014]
11/22 - Attack on Titan Part I: Crimsom Bow and Arrow (n/a)
11/29 - Parasyte Part I (Toho) [Old Date: TBD December 2014]

December:
12/13 - Aikatsu! The Movie (Toei)
12/13 - Ao Haru Ride (Toho)
12/13 - The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies (Warner Bros.) [Old Date: 02/28/15]
12/19 - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Paramount) [Old Date: TBA December 2014]
12/20 - Youkai Watch: The Secret of Nyan's Birth! (Toho)
12/20 - Big Hero 6 (Disney)

Advance tickets for the Youkai movie in December also went on sale yesterday, and is reportedly close to selling 500,000 tickets in a day (the amount that's available to purchase right now).  It's pretty obvious that it's having an impact on the Pokemon series now.  Nothing has been able to compete against Pokemon all these years, but maybe it finally does have a rival.

No, but Fox is still listed as the distributor, so it seems planned for later this year or early 2015.

Release dates come pretty late in Japan.  A lot of those October/November films just got a date and there are several films still TBD for August-December.

So they're going back to december for 'The Hobbit' ? The second one did even worse than the first in that late february-early march slot so it isn't that surprising. And this time it won't be facing 'One Piece Z' so perhaps will it at least manage to save face and be the highest grossing of the three.

Just when we thought we are done with Frozen, it continues to break more records and surprise everyone. Please keep us updated when you find out the DVD Sales.

I want Frozen to completely obliterate the Spirited Away records in Home Video. I know it already did it in the number of Blu-rays sold but it should beat the overall (DVD+Blu-ray) number too soon.

VHS can be excluded from this number as it doesn't exist now but if you have to include VHS number in the total, then lets just say the digital sales can account for the VHS count. This way the total DVD+Blu-ray+Digital will exceed 4.1 million at some point.

Spirited Away - DVD+Blu-ray+VHS sales = 4.1 million

Frozen - Blu-ray Sales = 1.046 million

Frozen DVD and Digital sales are unknown currently. Digital sales were in the millions but we do not have an actual number as the data has to be obtained from various sources offering the movie digitally.

Spirited Away actually hasn't been released on Blu Ray yet.  It just so happens to finally be released on the format TOMORROW though. :P
