JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

Disney is golden in Japan right now.

True, albeit it didn't seem to help Planes: Fire & Rescue any. Popularity is still very much on a per-movie basis for these movies in Japan, even when a brand seems to be hot. Now, obviously this example wasn't from Walt Disney Animation Studios specifically, but the rule is true even for Pixar, as we saw not long ago with Brave, which flopped.

All execpt marvel

That's true in terms of business (The Avengers doing well notwithstanding), but in terms of brand/image there isn't much, if any, of an association between Disney and Marvel in Japan, is there? For that matter, I doubt that there is much of an association anywhere.

Lots of young women across Japan buying advance tickets for the Cinderella movie. Apparently, you get some cutesy charm when you book early.

There is that and maybe Frozen Fever as motivating factors. ;)

Out of the four main anime movie series thus far, I'm sure Pokemon will gross the lowest.  Every since the DP Golden Days, the movies have gone on a downward spiral in terms of gross.

Pokemon Hoopa movie: $25 - 30 million

Doraemon movie: $35 - 40 million

Yokai Watch movie: $50 - 55 million

Dragon Ball Z movie: $30 - 40 million

That's around a cumulative of $140 - 165 for the four main anime series in my opinion and that sum is quite a large one!  I'm sure each franchise will have no problem passing $10 million or $20 million.  Pokemon, unlike Yokai Watch has a larger older audience to work with and with the obvious appeal of the first trailer, I'm sure this will pass Diancie's gross.  Yokai Watch might have already peaked with its first movie and I'm predicting a mild drop from the first movie's cumulative gross.  Doraemon films are always high grossing films so it's without question that this film will gross a considerable amount of mullah.  Dragon Ball Z is gaining some buzz with Frieza returning but for some, the new character design and obvious (maybe) rehash of the Frieza arc might displease some fans but nonetheless will be a huge film.

You forgot the 'Detective Conan' franchise in your list. It will probably gross around the same as Doraemon and Dragon Ball Z if not slightly more.

-- ¥27 million ($235,000), -34%, ¥1.72 billion ($14.8 million), Ao Haru Ride (Toho) Week 7
-- ¥14 million ($120,000), -60%, ¥1.13 billion ($9.6 million), The Vancouver Asahi (Toho) Week 6

These are some very nice holds this weekend, making up for some of last weekend's slightly bigger drops.

>Annie's performance would be a little surprising to me, but musicals almost always do very well in Japan. Japanese moviegoers generally enjoy musicals, with nearly all of them doing good to breakout numbers. Annie is one of the lowest opening musicals, but a debut around ¥200 million should get it to ¥1.1/1.2 million (about $10 million).

None of the limited openers were wide enough to get an accurate estimate for, but I don't think any of them made the Top 10. Big Eyes looks like it may have grossed ¥20 million, and Kano maybe ¥15 million.

However, the AKB48 Request Hour Live-Broadcast looks like it might have the admissions to crack the Top 10 if its ticket prices were high enough. I'm not betting on it doing more than ~¥30 million needed to have done so, though.

Weekend Ranking (01/24-25)

01 (01) Big Hero 6 (Disney) Week 6
02 (--) Annie (Sony) DEBUT
03 (02) Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! (Toho) Week 6
04 (03) ST: Scientific Investigation Squad (Toho) Week 3
05 (04) Psycho-Pass: The Movie (Toho Video Division) Week 3
06 (05) Ressha Sentai ToQger vs. Kyoryuger: The Movie (Toei) Week 2
07 (08) Ao Haru Ride (Toho) Week 7
08 (07) Again (Toei) Week 2
09 (06) Taken 3 (Fox) Week 3
10 (09) Bali Big Brother (Phantom Film) Week 2

>Big Hero 6 wins its 4th-consecutive week atop the box-office, earning ¥349,401,400 ($3.0 million) with 260,795 admissions over the weekend (down 18%). After 6-weeks in release, it has earned an incredible ¥7,030,351,100 ($59.9 million) with 5,511,460 admissions. It will overtake Yo-Kai Watch in gross by Wednesday.

>Annie had a successful debut, taking in a solid ¥218,572,300 ($1.9 million) with 164,186 admissions on 505 screens. This gives Sony a good start to 2015, as Annie should earn around ¥1.2/1.3 billion ($11/12 million).

>Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! falls to the #3 spot in its 6th-weekend in release. After 6-weeks in release, it maintains its lead over Big Hero 6, with ¥7.07 billion ($60.3 million) with 6.38 million admissions, but won't stay ahead for much longer. It is still likely to win this close race in admissions, however.

None of the weekend's other openers (all limited) made the Top 10.

2014 Japan yearly statistics:

Box office  207 billion yen +6.6%

admissions 161 million +3.4%

Local : Foreign - 58.3 : 41.7

Screens: 3364

http://www.eiren.org/toukei/index.html

The market probably decreased in Dollars given the decrease of the Yen.

And given the increase in admissions it seems clear the VAT increase had an effect on ticket prices, propelling the BO.
