'Umizaru: Brave Hearts' breaks ¥7 billion ($90 million) after nine weeks in release.

'Wolf Children' will soon surpass ¥4 billion ($51 million), making it the only non-brand animated film to ever achieve that accomplishment.

'The Avengers' enters the Top 10 after four weeks in release.

"Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL' exceeded ¥1 billion after just 3 days, and will be soaring up the charts all month long when it enters the Top 3 and will probably settle for #2 behind 'Umizaru: Brave Hearts'.

Technically a 2011 film in Japan.

It's actually a 2012 release. The BO year runs from Dec. 1st - Nov. 30th. Any film released in December is counted toward the following year. Also, any film released before December that grosses over 1 billion yen is also counted toward the following year. Edited by Corpse

Thanks. Didn't know the Japanese BO calendar, now I do. It was released in 2011 but I can see why is counts as 2012 film.

I'm fine with around 45M+ total. Remember, we weren't even sure if it could make 20M so this is great.

Indeed, it is great Avengers is doing so well when it could have relatively flopped hard in Japan with ~$20M.

Sept. 15-16

Weekend Forecast

1 (-) Resident Evil V: Retribution (Sony) ¥600 million ($7.6 million), NEW

2 (1) Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL (Toho) ¥550 million ($7 million), Week 2

3 (-) Insight into the Universe (TOEI) ¥250 million ($3.2 million), NEW

4 (2) Rurouni Kenshin (Warner Bros.) ¥190 million ($2.4 million), Week 4

5 (3) Dearest (Toho) ¥125 million ($1.6 million), Week 4

6 (4) The Avengers (Disney) ¥100 million ($1.3 million), Week 5

7 (-) Mirror Mirror (Gaga) ¥90 million ($1.2 million), NEW

8 (5) Prometheus (FOX) ¥65 million ($800,000), Week 4

9 (7) Dreams for Sale (Asmik Ace) ¥60 million ($750,000), Week 2

10 (9) The Intouchables (Gaga) ¥50 million ($650,000), Week 3

After last weekend's rough drops, this weekend should be very healthy. Monday is also a National Holiday, which will give the box office an additional boost.

The top spot will be pretty close between 'Resident Evil V' and 'Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL'. It's unlikely 'REV' matches 'REIV''s opening and final total (released during the height of 3D), but the franchise is strong and the latest film probably won't drop too much from it's predecessor. I think 'Bayside' will win the weekend in admissions, but 3D will put 'REV' over-the-top in gross. 'REV's opening weekend prediction, and also 'Mirror Mirror's, excludes what they make today (Friday).

'Finding Nemo 3D' will likely miss debuting in the Top 10 despite the popularity of the original film. Re-releases have always failed in the market, and 3D re-releases haven't been performing any better. Both Star Wars 3D and Titanic 3D disappointed this year, as well as all the Disney 3D releases. As far as I know, at least since 1980, no re-release has ever been a commercial success (1 billion yen earner) in the market.
