JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

There is some kind of public holiday in Japan on October 8th. Does anyone know what movies open there on the 5th? And why wouldn't EXP2 open that weekend instead of the 20th?

More than a dozen of local movies open on that Saturday.

'Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL' climbs 35 spots in just seven days (the largest gain of the year). It'll likely reach the Top 5 after this coming weekend.

'Wolf Children' was just shy of 4 billion on Sunday, but hit the mark on Monday. As I mentioned before, it's the first non-brand animated film to ever achieve the milestone.

'Rurouni Kenshin' becomes the #1 film for Warner Bros. this year, topping 'Dark Shadows', 'Sherlock Holmes', and 'The Dark Knight Rises'.

So going by that chart, correct me if I'm wrong, TA made about ¥200M/$1.9M during the week.

The prior week as of 9/9 it looks like it made ¥310M/$4.35M?

Am I reading the charts wrong or is the dollar conversion off?

The drop off still looks like it's 33%. Not bad. :)

Here is where I pulled info from:

As of 9/16

08 :: ¥3.35 / $42.56 (6.71x) :: The Avengers :: Aug. :: 2.23 :: 34 :: Disney

As of 9/9

10 :: ¥3.15 / $40.66 (6.30x) :: The Avengers :: Aug. :: 2.11 :: 27 :: Disney

As of 9/2

12 :: ¥2.84 / $36.31 (5.66x) :: The Avengers :: Aug. :: 1.89 :: 20 :: Disney

You notice the difference because the exchange rate changes so much. For example, RE5 grossed 1.248 billion ($15.8 million) in four days but if you do the conversion at this moment it's almost $300,000 higher. Tomorrow, it might be $300,000 less. Who knows? Comparing films, even against themselves, in USD is usually inaccurate because of how the exchange rate fluctuates.

What I do is try to adjust the totals each week to find an average total in USD. I think it's the best way to find an accurate USD total, but not perfect and that's why I never BOLD the USD totals.

It's difficult to say at this time. WOM and reviews were solid, but the leg's haven't been strong enough to indicate the sequel would see a large increase. The novelty factor also drew in many and that won't be there next time. We'll just have to wait and see.Druv10 - Just one, maybe two, openers this weekend will debut in the Top 10 so The Avengers will have at least one more week there.

Sept. 22-23

Weekend Forecast

1 (2) Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL (Toho) ¥450 million ($5.7 million) Week 3

2 (1) Resident Evil: Retribution (Sony) ¥400 million ($5.1 million) Week 2

3 (-) Tiger & Bunny The Movie (Shochiku/T-Joy) ¥150 million ($1.9 million) NEW

4 (3) Rurouni Kenshin (Warner Bros.) ¥120 million ($1.5 million) Week 5

5 (4) Insight into the Universe (Shochiku) ¥100 million ($1.3 million) Week 2

6 (5) Dearest (Toho) ¥70 million ($900,000) Week 5

7 (9) The Intouchables (Gaga) ¥65 million ($825,000) Week 4

8 (6) The Avengers (Disney) ¥55 million ($700,000) Week 6

9 (7) Key of Life (Klockworx) ¥50 million ($650,000) Week 2

10 (-) Rock of Ages (Warner Bros.) ¥40 million ($500,000) NEW

'Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL' will likely return to the top and could stay there until late October.

'Tiger & Bunny' is a little tricky to pinpoint because while it has a small screen count, it's going to sellout many showtimes due to the fan-base. It's probably going to have a similar PSA as 'Gintama' or 'Lyrical Nanoha'. I know last July it was reported it sold 42,000 tickets in advance.

One might think 'Rock of Ages' would do much better but Warner Bros. isn't even releasing in in 100 theaters. A debut outside the Top 10 wouldn't be surprising either.

Projected Totals after Sunday (¥1 billion+):

'Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL' ~¥3.7 billion ($47 million) after 17 days.

'The Avengers' ~¥3.5 billion ($45 million) after 41 days.

'Rurouni Kenshin' ~¥2.7 billion ($34 million) after 30 days.

'Resident Evil: Retribution' ~¥2.1 billion ($27 million) after 10 days.

'Dearest' ~¥1.9 billion ($24 million) after 30 days.

You think legs weren't great? I remember you saying that, movies that open in Obon holidays usually will get around 2x multiplier and TA's well above that. (2.6x)

I am saying the legs haven't been great. There's a difference between what's good and what's great.The 6-day multiplier is actually 2.41x which is good, but not great. User reviews average are around 3.5-3.8, also good but not great. I'm not saying it's performance hasn't been good, it indeed has, it just hasn't been great enough to indicate a large uptick in the sequel, imo, and is going to gross in it's expected (post-Opening Week) 3.5 billion ($40-50 million) range in the end. The studio was projecting it to reach 5 billion ($65 million) after it's opening and it won't come anywhere near that. Of course, studios in Japan often overproject to build hype, too, meaning it didn't underperform. It still had one of the better performances this year, and arguably the best among Hollywood releases.

Hopefully 60 mill+ with a killer release date
