Thanks to Corpse

Box Office updates are still coming in at an incredibly slow rate due to New Year so it'll probably a few more days before weekend figures are released again (still waiting for last weekend, too).

In the meantime, projections for the beginning of the 2013 Box Office year:

First Third of the Year Projections (12/1-3/30)

¥7 billion ($84 million)↓

-One Piece Film Z

¥6 billion ($72 million)↨

-

¥5 billion ($60 million)↨

-

¥4 billion ($48 million)↨

-A Good Day to Die Hard

-Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum

-Les Miserables

¥3 billion ($36 million)↨

-007: Skyfall

-Dragonball Z: Battle of Gods

-Hunter X Hunter: Phantom Rouge

-Oz: The Great and Powerful

-Platinum Data

-Strawberry Night

¥2 billion ($24 million)↨

-Brain Man

-Cloud Atlas

-Humanoid Monster, Bem

-Jack and the Giant Slayer

-Jack Reacher

-Kamen Rider X Kamen Rider Fourze & Wizard

-Life of Pi

-Pretty Cure All Stars New Stage 2: Friend of the Heart

-Ted

-The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

-Today, I Started Loving You

-Tokyo Family

-Wreck-It-Ralph

¥1 billion ($12 million)↑

I'm seeing 23 films exceeding ¥1 billion in this time frame compared to last year's 20 films.

Note: The Yen has been fluctuating A LOT since the election two weeks ago, so the USD numbers are very likely to change significantly as they have on a daily basis.

Japanese people are officially dead to me.

Given I love their shonen (manga and anime) I can't forget them, but yeah it was a terrible year. Maybe it was just a bad year with better years coming?By the way it's an aging country, in 2013 25% of the Japanese population will be 65 and over, that means they'll gain 1 million retirees, and will have less people under 18.This market will decrease, its best moments belong to the past.

How much do you expect Life of Pi will do in Japan, Corpse?

It's a tough one to gauge, but given the reviews and success in other markets it should at least reach 1 billion ($12 million). If it gets some award season love that'll help it out, too.

So they might be literally dead, soon. Not just to me.Sorry, that was a bad joke. Edited by Elessar

No one denies that Japanese films are still doing great, but Hollywood films are clearly in the shitter

I can see where this statement is coming from but it's not really Hollywood films. Every 2D Hollywood film did very well last year, it's the 3D releases that disappointed. 3D is a major hindrance in the market and Hollywood needs to address it if they want to remain competitive in Japan. Local studios saw this early on when Kaibutsu Kun, Inazuma Eleven, and Always 3 did less than expected, and haven't released any 3D films since Jan. 2012, and no 3D films have been announced for 2013. 3D is literally preventing people from going to the movies it seems. 1 Billion would be very disappointing to me. Given the fact that LOP has performed on MI4/Avengers/Skyfall levels in many Asian markets, it would be disappointing if it stays so much behind in Japan.
