3D is what they're doing wrong. Japanese people could not give less of a shit about 3D.

Well, they actually LOVED 3D. Just look at Avatar, Alice, and TS3, the only Hollywood movies that crossed 10 billion yen in the last 5 years. They even made their own 3D movies. But then they got bored pretty quickly. Maybe the ticket price is too expensive, I don't know.

Skyfall is already the highest grossing Bond movie btw, so it's pretty good actually. But I can understand how Ted is so successful. Japanese already love the cute teddy bear. To make him a drunk, party-loving guy is imginative and different. And Japan IS imaginative and different. That's why Ghibli, and especially Miyazaki's animations are dominating the all time box office.

From Corpse

1 (1) A Good Day to Die Hard (Fox) Week 2
2 (2) Ted (Toho-Towa) Week 6
3 (-) A Certain Magical Index (Warner Bros.) NEW!
4 (3) Brain Man (Toho) Week 3
5 (5) Les Miserables (Toho-Towa) Week 10
6 (4) Strawberry Night (Toho) Week 5
7 (-) A Chain on a Grassland (Toei) NEW!
8 (6) Zero Dark Thirty (Gaga) Week 2
9 (7) Life of Pi (Fox) Week 5
10 (-) A Story of Yonosuke (Showgate) NEW!

Well, well. Seeing A Certain Magical Index
here is quite the surprise. I never thought to included it in the
forecast because it's playing on just 30 screens and no weekend data of
any kind was released for it either. It wasn't even playing at any of
the major cinema chains meaning it did massive business (likely entire
weekend sell outs) at the few smaller theaters it was playing.

The film sure brought out the otaku fans, too, delivering a very impressive ¥100,757,700 ($1.15 million) on 69,117 admissions playing on only 30 screens.
A 2-Day PSA of ¥3.36 million ($36,000), very nice. That also gives it
an avg. ticket price of ¥1,458 ($16), nearly as high as film with a 60%+
3D share which confirms the otaku base that don't care what tickets
cost. I remember some locations were selling tickets at ¥10,000+ ($120+
then) for the K-ON! film a couple years back.

A Chair on a Grassland opened in 7th place with disappointing results for Toei. Playing on 207 screens, it only managed 39,509 admissions for a ¥44,198,100 ($475,000) debut.

This is from Corpse again:

-Les Miserables (In Release, Week 10): It doesn't need anymore help atthe box-office, but the Best Supporting Actress win for Anne Hathawayand the wins for Makeup and Sound Mixing (less so of course) will justpush it to even greater heights than it's already headed. The film isaiming for 6 billion yen ($65 million+), and the wins tonight probablysecures it.-Lincoln (4/19): It wasn't too popular tonight andwhile it only won Best Actor for DDL and Best Production Design, theformer win along with having Spielberg at the helm gives it potential.Overall, though, I don't think tonight changed anything.-DjangoUnchained (3/1): Opening this upcoming weekend, the win for BestSupporting Actor, Chistoph Waltz, and Best Original Screenplay shouldgive it a better than expected debut this week. I don't know if it has 1billion yen potential given Tarantino's past few films, but it'spossible.-Life Of Pi (In Release, Week 5): Having won the mostawards, including the very important Best Director win for Ang Lee, Ithink a sizable boost can be expected for a couple weeks and will pushthe film past the 2 billion yen mark which wasn't looking good beforetonight.-Zero Dark Thirty (In Release, Week 2): After a poorsecond weekend hold and disappointing at the Oscars tonight, I don'texpect it to hang on for long.-Silver Linings Playbook (InRelease, Week 1): Jennifer Lawrence's win for Best Actress might giveit a little life and an expansion after debuting in just 56 theatersthis weekend and missing the Top 10. I wouldn't expect much for it,however since interest was already low.

And

¥5.02 billion ($56.67 million) Les Miserables

¥3.29 billion ($36.86 million) Ted

¥1.71 billion ($19.80 million)   Life of Pi

¥1.66 billion ($19.14 million) The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

¥1.23 billion ($13.43 million) A Good Day to Die Hard
